CIS 2320 CIS: INTRODUCTION TO COMPUTERS Fall 2005
DESCRIPTION: This course is the microcomputer tools course in the College of Business. The
objective is to introduce the student to relevant computer technology of the day. The Windows Operating
System will be first discussed. Students are expected to improve their computer skills by learning software
tools--ACCESS ( a database program) and EXCEL (a spreadsheet program)--important in the world of
business. By doing so, they will learn to solve business problems confronting them. Also, PowerPoint and
the Internet will be discussed.
COURSE OBJECTIVES:
The overall objective of the course is to acquaint the student with the capabilities of extensively used
microcomputer tools. Although we are using the Microsoft products, this doesn’t suggest an endorsement;
they are, however, the most frequently encountered in most organizations. Moreover, an understanding of
these will enable the student to easily transfer the techniques if competing products are used at the student=s
workplace. Upon successful completion of the course the student will be able to:
$ Demonstrate proficiency in the use of Microsoft Windows XP
$ Demonstrate proficiency in the use of Microsoft Excel 2003
$ Demonstrate proficiency in the use of Microsoft Access 2003

RULES:: >
· It's the students' responsibility to keep him/herself informed of readings, assignments, and deadlines.
· Regular class attendance and completed assignments are looked at to determine participation. I look at
these factors when your overall score is borderline (say, 69, 79, or 89)!
· Late entry to class is highly discouraged. Instructor reserves the right to refuse entry to such students.
· Assignments will be distributed in class or through the website.

· Normal time for an assignment completion is 1week unless specified earlier. Sorry, no exceptions.
· All assignments must be done on computer and turned in on time (beginning of class time). Please do
not submit work to me later. Instructor reserves the right to deduct 50% to 100% for late submission.
· In case you're going to be absent, early submissions (stamped before class hour) can be done at the
department office COBA 205. Please do not turn in work under my office door. THEY WILL NOT
BE GRADED! This is a strict policy.
· The lowest assignment grade will be dropped before final grade calculation!
· No make-up tests will be given without well-documented emergencies. These include: serious medical
condition (hospital stay) or death in the immediate family. Bear in mind that make-up tests are
generally harder and at the discretion of the instructor. Alternatively, the instructor may choose to
give the student a substitute exam grade 20% less than the earned exam grade.
· Cell-phones, beepers, and other electronic devices must be turned off during the class.

90 to 100 -- A
80 to 89 -- B
70 to 79 -- C
60 to 69 -- D
0 to 60 -- F
NOTE: Students dropping before the Drop Date will receive an automatic W. Anyone dropping after that
date will receive an F. Incompletes will be given in case of extraordinary documented evidence. Prior
notification is necessary for such action.

Attendance Policy:
I will take attendance three times this semester: the first day of class, census day and during the last week
of classes. The purpose is to assure that you are properly registered so that you may obtain credit for the
course. Other than that, you are all adults and have numerous priorities. I will assume that this course is
among them. Be aware, however that the majority of what will be introduced will be done during the class
session. You will not do well if you miss many classes.
