Dear Park Hill Supporter,
This is an exciting time for both the Park Hill School District and
the Park Hill Education Foundation.
The District is enjoying historic levels of success in the classroom,
in the quality of its educational programs and facilities, and in the
value it delivers to its community. The Foundation has worked in
close partnership with the District to identify funding priorities
that provide the greatest educational benefits. Supplemental
funds from the Foundation provide numerous opportunities
to assist in educating our youth as well as offering special
opportunities for teachers to help them in furthering their skills in
the classroom.
The Foundation is uniquely positioned to provide opportunities
for community and philanthropically-mined people to contribute
to the future in a meaningful and long-lasting manner.
•Our scholarship programs continue rewarding district seniors
with college-level and future learning opportunities, while
our classroom grants encourage and reward teachers who
develop innovative teaching techniques enhancing students’
opportunities to learn.
•Our financial support of the Smart Start Summer School
program has provided funds to pilot an academic intervention
program designed to meet the individual needs of students.
Thus better preparing these students for the upcoming school
year and increasing their academic success.
•Our endowment funding opportunities provide the District
greater resources while offering donors an opportunity to
perpetually contribute to their community.

Education Foundation, Inc. is a
nonprofit organization dedicated to
raising private funds to help support
educational programs within the
Park Hill School District. The
Foundation was established in 1997
to encourage private support for our
schools. We do this by generating
and guiding philanthropic resources
through personal and corporate
contributions, planned giving, and
events.

Since 1998, 198 scholarships have been awarded to Park Hill School District graduating seniors totaling $222,000. In 2011, the
Foundation awarded 13 Endowed Named Scholarships and four Named Scholarships.

of $2,000 and are renewable for one year.
Student Grants
The Dr. Gayden Carruth Endowed Student Grants for Exceptional Learning
Opportunities are designed to support students who have demonstrated
academic ability and perseverance in their continuing educational pursuits.
Grants may be funded up to $500. The grants are open to all grade levels
and may be used for offsetting tuition/fees at a large variety of special
camps or other learning events. Examples would include camps for music,
science, fine arts, geography, etc. Since the grants were first awarded in
2007, 28 grants have been awarded for $10,312.
Endowed Classroom Grant
The Larry Gardner Excellence in Teaching Award Grant is awarded each
year to the recipient(s) of a classroom grant who exhibits excellence in the
classroom. This grant was first awarded in 2003.
National Board Certification Grants
The Park Hill School District Education Foundation desires to encourage
and support those Park Hill School District teachers and counselors who
are pursuing National Board Certification. It is recognized that those
obtaining this certification have demonstrated that they have met high
and rigorous standards for accomplished teaching. Grants of $250 each
have been awarded to 53 teachers since 2005.
Teacher of the Year Grants
Each year the Park Hill School District Teacher of the Year receives two
$500 Classroom Grants. One grant is provided by the Katy Pat Dorsey
Endowed Teacher of the Year Grant. The other grant is provided by the
Park Hill National Education Association through proceeds from the Read
Across America event.

2011-2012 Classroom Grants
In keeping with the Foundation’s mission one of its primary
programs is the Classroom Grant program. The Foundation
provides funds for innovative educational programs or
techniques for our students in the classroom above what
tax dollars provide. Since 1999, the Park Hill Education
Foundation has awarded 137 Classroom Grants to 376
teachers totaling $196,641.

Raz-zle Dazzle Readers!
Raz-Kids is an online reading program, where Kindergarten
students can read leveled books anywhere they can access the
internet. The Raz-Kids reading program helps us accomplish
our goal of creating on grade level readers by providing books
that the students can read, no matter their reading level. From
the beginning reader to the more advanced, students can read
the books independently, listen to books read aloud, or read
with vocabulary and pronunciation support.

Beyond the Home Visit
Parent involvement is the key to successful learning, especially
in the years prior to Kindergarten. The project allows for
families to participate in a Lending Library to help prepare
students for success in Kindergarten. Teachers provide families
a different backpack twice monthly so students are exposed
to materials directly linked to the Missouri Early Learning
Standards. The backpack activities allow for student learning
to continue beyond the home visit. Not only do the teachers
provide the materials for the activities, but model the activity
with the families to ensure parent understanding of the lesson.

One School, One Book
One School, One Book creates a shared reading experience
within a school. Every family receives a copy of the same
book to read over one academic quarter. Activities at school
promote and enrich this shared experience. These activities
include assemblies as well as art and writing contests. In
addition, daily trivia engages students. To accommodate
families unable to read at home, “read-ins” are hosted 30
minutes prior to the school day. Students come and listen to
the previous night’s reading. Through One School, One Book
students take pride in a shared experience while developing a
passion for reading.

Early Learning Using Interactive Technology for Children
with Autism
Autism is a lifelong disability that affects the way a person
communicates and relates to other people and the world
around them. Those affected typically display impairments
in three areas: social interaction, communication, and
behavior. Our goal is for younger students with autism
to be engaged in fun learning opportunities using iPad
technology.

Revving Up with Reader’s Workshop
The more you read the better you get.
Our goal is for all students to achieve.
Kindergarten and 5th grade will pilot
the program. Reader’s Workshop is
implemented through the use of specific
literature skills incorporating schema,
metacognition, inferring, questioning,
synthesizing, determining importance and
visualizing.

Words Their Way: Word Study in Action
Words Their Way: Word Study in Action
is a developmentally driven instructional
approach providing an integrated way to
teach phonics, vocabulary, and spelling to
improve literacy skills. Using a systematic
approach to word study, guided by an
informed interpretation of spelling errors
and other literacy behaviors, Words Their
Way offers a teacher-directed, child-centered
plan for vocabulary growth and spelling
development. Instruction is differentiated
in small groups according to developmental
spelling levels. Word study activities are
active and require students to manipulate,
categorize and examine spelling features.

Cruz into Reading
Students “Cruz into Reading” with an
e-reader that promotes independent reading
based on the concept that the more students
read, the better readers they become. This
grant purchased a set of Cruz eReaders
for the fourth and fifth grade levels. The
students participate in Literature Circles,
while engaging in guided discussion to
promote their love of learning as readers.

Elementary
Closing the Gap
Park Hill elementary school students
from homes in economic need have
scored substantially lower than their
peers on Missouri Assessment Program
tests. To combat this problem, Closing
the Gap identifies students in the free
and reduced price lunch program
who have failed to score at the
proficient level on standardized tests,
and provides them with seventy-five
minutes of intensive instruction after
school one day per week.

Bridge the Gap to MAP!
“Bridge the Gap to MAP” is designed
to increase students’ mathematical
and reading ability, provide instruction
and practice for students, and improve
test scores with a resource that is
specific to Missouri Standards. Buckle
Down Missouri Map provides targeted
support and MAP test practice to
reinforce math concepts with lessons
and examples from real-world
situations. Two MAP practice tests
establish a starting point for instruction
and measure student learning.

Elementary
Not all ELMOs are Cute and Cuddly
The Electric Light Magnifying Object (ELMO)
is transforming classroom instruction by
allowing teachers to instruct in ways that
enhance the learning of children like never
before. The ELMO document camera has the
ability to project two and three dimensional
objects onto a screen. Captivated students
watch as the words of “The Cat in the Hat”
come alive as their teacher points out new
words and entertaining illustrations. Children
who become enthralled in their lessons retain
more of what they have learned.

Smart Start
S U M M E R S C H O O L
Smart Start is a focused summer school academic
intervention program designed to meet the individual
needs of students who just completed Kindergarten, first,
second or third grade and are not performing at grade
level. The goal is to prepare students for the upcoming
school year and keep them from losing ground during the
summer.
The main objective is to increase the academic success of
the students. Literacy is the key. All school subject matters
require reading and comprehension; science, social studies
and even math. Through this program students learn the
skills needed to become more proficient in reading. It
builds their confidence and gives them that “Smart Start”
for the coming year.
Smart Start provides each student with transportation,
breakfast and supplies. Students get specialized and
individual instruction in small classroom settings. The
program was offered as a pilot program during the summer
of 2010 and expanded to two locations in the summer of
2011.
After the program was implemented Smart Start students
were compared to similar students in Park Hill that chose
not to attend. The comparison was based from a nationally
normed test that was administered to all students in the first
two weeks of school in the fall of 2010 and 2011. Results
found students that participated in Smart Start were roughly
one month ahead of students that did not participate.
These students could not receive valuable summer support
without local funding. It is estimated each year the
Foundation will need to raise $20,000 to $25,000 through
private donations to support the program.

The 7th Annual Community Breakfast was held on Tuesday,
October 25th at the Hawthorne House in Parkville. This
is a time when we bring our school, corporate and parent
communities together to honor the accomplishments of
the Park Hill Education Foundation and the Park Hill School
District. Dr. Dennis Fisher, Superintendent, presented the
Report to the Community. Entertainment was provided by
the 5th grade students from Graden Elementary.

the Park Hill School District Education Foundation.

movie while they support our schools, our children
