OFC WOMEN’S OLYMPIC FOOTBALL TOURNAMENT DRAW
DATE KICK OFF MATCH RESULT
Saturday 8 March 14H00 PAPUA NEW GUINEA vs. NEW ZEALAND
OFC PRESIDENT REYNALD TEMARII
I have the pleasure of welcoming the participants
of the OFC Olympic Football Tournament
qualifi ers to Fiji and Papua New Guinea as the
race for qualifi cation for the Beijing Olympic
Games begins in earnest.
The Men’s tournament promises to be the
most fascinating and closely contested competition
in recent years with participating nations
embarking on a strong preparation programmes.
New Zealand begin as favourites but the challenge
from the host nation Fiji and Papua New
Guinea, Solomon Islands and Vanuatu promises
to be powerful.
It is encouraging to see Cook Islands at this
level of competition after the senior team
showed courage and tenacity at the XIII South
Pacifi c Games – Samoa 2007.
The women’s play-off match pits XIII South
Pacifi c Games gold medallists Papua New
Guinea against New Zealand in Port Moresby.
Papua New Guinea has achieved high honours
in women’s football fi nishing in second place
in the OFC Women’s Championship prior to its
gold medal performance in Apia last year.
A match against New Zealand will be a tough
challenge for the host nation and it is important
to remember that although there are signifi
cant differences in ability, both teams are
playing to help promote women’s football in
this region.
WELCOME FROM
THE OFC PRESIDENT
REYNALD TEMARII
The relationship between football and television
has been a fruitful one in most parts of
the world and is beginning to take shape in
Oceania.
It gives me great pleasure to see the possibility
of EMTV broadcasting live coverage of
a women’s football match to the people of
Papua New Guinea.
It is an exercise that will help promote not only
football but the positive role football can play
in creating positive role models and national
heroes at the same time supporting anti-domestic
violence, health and education initiatives.
With New Zealand hosting the FIFA U-17 Women’s
World Cup in November 2008 this match
takes on added importance for the women’s
game in a broader sense.
I encourage all competitors and spectators to
uphold the spirit of fair play and offer my best
wishes in pursuit of your Olympic dream.
Yours in football,
Reynald Temarii
FTF President
OFC President
FIFA Vice-President
