3MED666 Medical Microbiology Assessments and study time The University Modular Framework states that a 15 credit module requires approximately 150 hours of study. For this module, the class contact time is 33 hours made up approximately of: Lectures Tutorials Practicals 21 hours (Note: the run of this module for part-time students has a slightly reduced number of lecture hours.) 2 hours 10 hours Therefore, for this module in addition to the class contact time spent in lectures, tutorials and practicals, you must study hard in your own time for at least another 117 hours to ensure success. In guided independent study (GIS) weeks there are no formal lectures (although there may be practical sessions for some modules) but you should still attend the University and work as guided by your lecturers. For this module, GIS weeks should be used to research and prepare the coursework assignments and consult your lecturers, if necessary. The GIS week in April should be used to prepare for the examinations. The assessments consist of two case studies, a practical report, and a 2-hour examination. The following is an indication of how you should devote your self-study time to the module and its assessment. The Case Studies count for 20% of the module assessment. You should spend about 20 hours preparing for this and writing it up. Expect to spend another few hours considering the feedback you will receive on this. The combined practical report is for three experiments held over three sessions and counts for 30% of the module assessment. You should read the practical schedules and ensure you understand the aims of the experiments and the means by which you will achieve the aims. Expect to spend about 30 hours on the practical report during the two weeks before the submission deadline and further time considering the feedback on your report and evaluating your understanding of the topics and your performance in producing the report. The exam counts for 50% of module assessment. You should spend time roughly equivalent to module contact time in lectures and tutorials (33 hours) during the semester to working on your lecture notes using recommended textbooks, journals, Internet and Intranet sources of information. Additional time (at least 27 hours) should be devoted to preparing for the examination using your lecture notes, text books and other sources, past examination papers and mark schemes.
