I pried her pianist’s fingers from the
keyboard where she had been digging
up roots. After copying more information,
she accompanied me to the Mensamobile,
which had remained ticketfree.
We scurried to the restaurant,
where she asked the Lebanese owners
if they knew her ancestors. Nobody
knew anyone. Some things are better
left undiscovered, though lunch, we
discovered, was delicious.
Cheryl found out that at age 60 one
could take college courses free. Now
she’s taking a course – Terrorism -- at
The Citadel. (THAT aged cat now is
out of the bag.) One of her classmates,
about to deliver his course speech,
asked if any Arabs were present.
Cheryl, raising her hand halfway, volunteered,
“Half-Arab.” Consequently,
there is no telling what he omitted,
though some things are better left
unsaid. His might have been a coarse
speech. And some hands are better
left unraised.
