A Rainbow A Day
The “A Rainbow A Day” program,
developed by Patricia “Tish” Kelly-
Holmes, M.D., Physician Director of
Community Health Enhancement,
promotes healthy eating and exercise
habits to second, third and fourth
grade students at St. Joseph Grade
School in South Bend. Based upon
Dr. Antonia Demas’ Food is Elementary
nutritional curriculum, the program
helps students learn the importance
of eating a balanced diet of vegetables,
fruits and whole grains in a fun,
sensory-based way.
“Healthy eating is easy, interesting,
delicious – and fun!” said Kelly-
Holmes, “We try to teach nutrition
in a way that makes it a game for
everyone - parents and kids.” With
food donated by Martin’s Super
Markets, volunteer food educators
teach kids fun ways to incorporate a
wide variety of colorful fruit, veggies
and whole grains into their diets.
Educators encourage them to keep a
journal about what they eat and how
they get exercise every day. Martin’s
also tracks the purchasing behaviors
of parents, noting any correlations
between what students are taught and
what parents are buying. Results will
help perfect the program’s agenda and
may help secure future funding for
similar programs.
New Look – Same Great Service
Renovations to the Ambulatory Care Center and
Surgery Waiting Room were completed in April, to
rave reviews from patients and staff members alike.
Patients now enjoy private, spacious rooms complete
with sinks, extra chairs and a television. This newly
renovated space was developed using experience
design tools out of Memorial’s work with the Tom
Peters Group and IDEO, two of the most renowned
innovation consulting companies in the world.
“Privacy was a big issue,” said Jodi Kalka, Assistant
Clinical Manager, Ambulatory Care Center. “When
a nurse is asking you questions about your medical
history with two other people in the room, privacy
definitely becomes an issue.” New rooms are just part
of the recent upgrade. Wider halls and expanded clinical
areas have been a huge hit with staff, and a new waiting
area by the waterfall creates a calming and relaxing
atmosphere for patients while they wait.
