Applied Theatre Program
for N(T) students
Our Challenge
In general, N(T) students are not accustomed to the learning
environment of our schools.
As a result, these students are not motivated to attend school and
find learning difficult.
Existing programmes run by different vendors may be varied, but
often without follow-up with the students at the end. Additionally,
external vendors may not be familiar to other aspects of the school
curriculum.
Our Approach and Solution
Bedok View Secondary School’s Normal Technical Curriculum
Review Committee designed a new Applied Theatre Programme for
the lower secondary Normal Technical students.
The objective of this programme is to provide a suitable learning
environment that fits the students’ innate capabilities.
The innovation creates opportunities for self-discovery through
customized education to help them develop their natural talent,
which is a strong motivating force.
Through this method, students develop learning as a lifelong process.
Results and Learning
The project is process-based with the common goal of an end-product,
and it fosters a sense of belonging to the school in both the students
and teachers involved.
Results included: high participation rate and instillation of values/skills
such as self-discipline, responsibility, leadership, listening and
communication skills in our students.
Students took pride in the roles that were assigned to them.
Team spirit and togetherness among the students were observed.
Students were driven during lessons, task-oriented, and engaged in
planned activities.
Attendance was regular (95%).
The innovation allowed for follow-up to be done effectively and
teachers could also make explicit connections for the learning with
other parts of the N(T) curriculum.

Applied Theatre Program
for N(T) students
Drama:
A selected group of Sec 2 N(T) students explore, share and propose new
behaviors and coping strategies to deal with real life situations.
The actors and actresses will then dramatize and perform the devised
situational play for peers to learn through the dramatic performance.
Backstage Crew: Prop Making/Stage Management/Lighting
These are our talented yet unseen heroes of the production!
This group of Sec 2 N(T) students will be exposed to general backstage
work in order to understand the coordination of the creative efforts needed
in putting a stage production together.
Marketing Team:
These are our Advertising Executives!
Some of the Sec 2 N(T) students will get involved in creative brain storming
sessions and promotion of the production to the school population.
They will create advertisements for the production through videos/posters.
Animation
These are our Motion Animators!
These Sec 2 N(T) students will conceptualize creative storylines, develop
personal characters, learn about stop motion video, and use video editing
software for transitional animation.
They will create paper models and conceptualize edited stop motion video
for the production.
Photography:
A group of Sec 1 N(T) students will learn photography principles and skills
to create artistic images for the backdrop of the production.
They will be capturing moments of an event or framing shots for publications.
Sound Production
Some of the Sec 1 N(T) students will be designing mood music and sound
effects to support the script.
They will ‘Stomp’ by performing with hand percussion instruments during
the production.
The skills learnt are relevant to the N(T) Music syllabus.
