pr<strong>in</strong>ciples <strong>in</strong> smallholder farm<strong>in</strong>g systems to improve food security. The recent symposium on<br />

<strong>Conservation</strong> Agriculture <strong>in</strong> Johannesburg, South Africa <strong>in</strong> February 2011 highlighted the critical need for<br />

upscal<strong>in</strong>g CF. A key po<strong>in</strong>t was encourag<strong>in</strong>g governments to develop and implement policies that support<br />

the upscal<strong>in</strong>g of conservation agriculture. This evaluation also recognized the importance of work<strong>in</strong>g<br />

closely with government organizations to promote CF.<br />

6.6 Understand<strong>in</strong>g Factors Caus<strong>in</strong>g Non-Adoption of <strong>Conservation</strong> <strong>Farm<strong>in</strong>g</strong><br />

The evaluation team concluded that there are several components of the CF system which result <strong>in</strong><br />

farmers mak<strong>in</strong>g a decision to not adopt CF. Some of the most frequently mentioned <strong>in</strong>cluded mulch<br />

procurement, time <strong>in</strong>vestment, cultural stigma and the cont<strong>in</strong>ued need to cultivate traditional crops<br />

us<strong>in</strong>g the conventional system. Focus<strong>in</strong>g efforts to clarify misconceptions or improve/adapt the exist<strong>in</strong>g<br />

CF system will improve CF adoption.<br />
