BALLARD TROPHY HISTORY<br />
<strong>The</strong> Ballard Trophy is one <strong>of</strong> <strong>Ithaca</strong> High School’s longest standing football<br />
traditions. <strong>The</strong> award has been presented to the Most Outstanding football player<br />
since the fall <strong>of</strong> 1929, when Mr. Clinton Ballard presented it to the athletic<br />
department. Mr. Ballard was a standout football player at <strong>Ithaca</strong> High School in<br />
the early 1900’s. Following his graduation, he attended Michigan State<br />
University where he also had athletic success playing for the Spartans and later<br />
became the director <strong>of</strong> the Extension Service program at MSU. Clinton Ballard<br />
passed away in the winter <strong>of</strong> 1956 at the age <strong>of</strong> 67. He is remembered as a great<br />
football player, educator and citizen. Mr. Howard Fortney, a lifelong <strong>Ithaca</strong><br />
resident, was the first recipient in 1929. Since that fall many outstanding football<br />
players have been chosen by their peers to receive this prestigious award. <strong>The</strong>
