The retreat is in the Murraguldrie State Forest.<br />

(55km South East <strong>of</strong> Wagga Wagga<br />

45 km North West <strong>of</strong> Tumbarumba<br />

7 km <strong>of</strong>f the Hume Highway.)<br />

It is set in a past forestry nursery area so it is surrounded<br />

by beautiful trees that provide good shade<br />

during visits.<br />

A shed provides shelter and contains a kitchen area<br />

with tables and chairs. An outlet on the container allows<br />

visitors to connect their own generator to power<br />

the facilities.<br />

Tank water is available and we ask visitors to be mindful<br />

in its usage.<br />

An amenities facility is available with toilets and<br />

showers. Hot water will shortly be available via a<br />

‘Donkey’ system operating on the pinecones readily<br />

available on site.<br />

Fire rings are available for use during the cooler<br />

months.<br />

The retreat is available to veterans and their families. It<br />

<strong>of</strong>fers good bush camping with basic facilities. Both<br />

caravans and tents can be accommodated.<br />

Please sign the visitor’s book, read the standing orders<br />

and make a donation to help keep the running costs<br />

down.<br />

After staying we ask you to take your rubbish<br />

home, replace firewood used, clean up the kitchen<br />

and the toilet/shower facilities you may have used<br />

before you leave.<br />

Elsey Station welcome Australia's veterans to<br />

ROPER RETREAT<br />

Open 1-31 August annually<br />

Vets are invited to rest by 60 km <strong>of</strong> the magnificent<br />

Roper River.<br />

Camping is free, there is fresh water in the river, with<br />

lots <strong>of</strong> peace for regeneration.<br />

Protocol: The same as for Pandanus Park ie take only<br />

photos, leave only footprints, you are totally responsible<br />

for yourself and there is absolutely no liability for<br />

Elsey Station or its residents. Ensure that you have<br />

medical clearance, and that you bring everything you<br />

might need.<br />

Where is it? 31km east along the Roper Highway,<br />

Northern Territory. Turn north at the Elsey Station<br />

sign. 3km later you will pass the Manager's house, and<br />

just 5km later you reach the Roper.<br />

How much dirt getting in? Only eight km. Yep, you<br />

read it right. You don't even need a fourby.<br />

How's the fishing? There are plenty <strong>of</strong> barra, seratoga<br />

and black bream - all great eating - and even catfish,<br />

if that's your fancy.<br />
