History - 2
• It appears that there has been a burst of Dendrobium
species origination since this time, rapidly expanding into
new niches. One example is the highland species with
highly colored tubular flowers that are mostly bird
pollinated.
• There are frequently different color forms of one species
from one mountain peak to another.
• The three most popular theories remaining suggest origins
either in India, Australia, or dual origin.
• The most widespread species are Dendrobium anosmum,
erosum, crumenatum, lobbi, stuartii, secundum, and
macrophyllum, which variously occur all the way from
India down to Australia. Most of these are lowland
species.
