W elcome to DMC Kresge Eye Institute The Kresge Eye Institute on the campus of the Detroit Medical Center (DMC) has moved into the top tier of eye care facilities in the United States. With advanced patient care delivered by leading ophthalmologists, one of the top ophthalmology training programs in the country and a long list of advances by our diseasefocused research group, we have taken a leadership role in improving eye care for our patients and the world. In this premier issue of InSight we will highlight some of our areas of research and the people who are conducting the work. Our research is done in response to clinical problems identified by our ophthalmologists. We have developed programs that include both research and clinical activities. One prime example is our diabetes program. Our research program led by Drs. Renu Kowluru and Robert N. Frank has taken the lead in exploring the mechanism of damage to the retinal capillaries induced by oxidative stress, a common biologic process. We have one of the leading clinical diabetes programs in the country, integrating the latest medical, laser and surgical treatments in management of our patients. Our group has led in the development of surgical techniques in management of diabetic retinal detachment and management of lens and corneal complications during vitrectomy. The advanced genetic research at the Kresge Eye Institute is evidenced by the work of Dr. Jayne Weiss. An internationally prominent corneal and external disease specialist, Dr. Weiss has recently uncovered the gene for Schnyder’s Corneal Dystrophy and is pursuing a treatment for this severe corneal abnormality. Training programs at Kresge Eye Institute are highly sought after and are among the best in the United States. You will meet Drs. Maria Kirzhner and Yevgeniy (Eugene) Shildkrot, two of the best and brightest residents in the country who also happen to be married to one another. Through the eyes of Maria and Yevgeniy, you will see the Kresge Eye Institute training experience and learn from Dr. Mark Juzych, our residency program director, why the program is so popular among incoming residents. With our partners at the DMC and Wayne State University School of Medicine, we are also proud to house the Ligon Research Center of Vision at the Kresge Eye Institute. This multidisciplinary center that was founded through the generosity of Michigan philanthropists Robert and Gerry Ligon is dedicated to prevention of vision loss and restoration of vision in blind individuals. EYE OPENER Accidents happen. For a 10-year-old girl from Virginia, it happened while hundreds of miles from home, visiting relatives in the Detroit area. Using a knife to pry open a toy box resulted in the tearing of her cornea and emergency surgery to save her sight. Working with a team at DMC Children’s Hospital, a Kresge pediatric ophthalmologist was able to restore her vision to 20/25. www.dmc.org
