Play Action Passing
• Constraint play to force the defense to defend
the entire field.
• Power action with QB rolling under and
outside.

Power Passing Game

Key Components for Successful Pass
• Pass Protection (play action assists greatly in
slowing rush)
• Passer that can throw (arm strength/accuracy)
• Receiver splits that match arm strength of
passer.
• Receivers that can catch (vertical routes,
crossing routes, and short routes). Not all
receivers are capable of catching every type of
route.

We consider six areas on the field that we can attack with our
passing game. Our primary points of attack are the perimeters and
the vertical outs as they have a higher percentage of success.

Read Advancement
• In all cases with younger teams/new passer
simply give him a one read play.
– Done by simply dropping the second and third read.
• Most common read is a two read concept simply
drop the third read. This is the most common
read I teach but if I have passer that is capable we
teach a three read concept.
• Age 9 to 11 we use COMMON READ 75% of the
time.

Blocking on the Play Side Edge
Four Points of contact on the DEMLOS:
1) The PSTE must release through
the nearest shoulder and his near
hand should punch and push him
back as he releases to slow his
rush.
2) The BB should release across his
face and his up field shoulder
should rub the chest of the
DEMLOS to slow his rush.
3) The PST should SLIDE SLIDE
MIRROR the DE and if he needs to
give ground in order to maintain
his mirror he does so.
4) The WB gains enough depth so tht
he can attack the outside arm pit
and seal the DE inside so that the
WB’s butt is facing the perimeter.
Back side pressure:
BST will always HINGE.
(HINGE/HINGE/MIRROR)
BSTE will always HINGE
(HINGE/HINGE/MIRROR)
OVER the BST and you
add an additional
blocker to the play side
(LEM if covered/SSM if
uncovered)

Power Pass
Run/Pass option
Power Pass
Play Action Passing
Basic flood pattern on the power side.
Read low to high (BB flat to WB out).
Advanced – low – intermediate - high
Run this to the QB’s throwing side at early age
Teach off side as well to develop rolling/throwing to weak side
YOU CAN CALL OVER TO GET AN ADDITIONAL BLOCKER ON PLAY
SIDE
Perimeter Triangle: If 2 attack the flat
Perimeter Triangle: If 4 attack the vertical out/peek
Switch call/tag to swap #1 and #2 receivers on play side.

Layered Blocking
• Passing Game the receivers who don’t get the ball are
always responsible for peeling back and walling off their
defender so the receiver has a lane to run vertically in.
• If the QB keeps the flat receiver will peel back inside and
wall off the first defender to show. The out receiver will do
the same thing. The fly receiver will peel back inside and
down to cut off backside pursuit.
• From that point if a receiver catches the ball the next
receivers up field peel back and wall off.
• This makes the QB keep and the BB flat home run plays if
the defense gets wall inside and we can create a vertical
lane.

Power Pass
If the PASSER has space go vertical and take what the defense give you!
RUN FIRST!
Advance Read: Low-intermediate-high (flat/out/corner)
Common Read: Low-High (flat/out)
Power Stick Pass
Common Read: (PEEK to FADE/FLAT/WHIP)
Basic Read: (FLAT/WHIP)
If the PASSER has space go vertical and take what the defense give
you! RUN FIRST!
This is the basic building block of a TRIANGLE READ (TOP-OUT-IN).
1 st receiver runs ORR FADE.
2 nd receiver runs a SIT-WHIP.
3 rd receiver runs FLAT/SHOOT.
Steps are based on 8 to 10 year olds. Increase by 2 steps if above
12 years old.
Once the BASIC and COMMON reads are mastered you can teach
the ADVANCED READ. See ADVANCED READ SLIDE.

Advanced Read
• Triangle reads can be difficult to teach so we
break it down into to three teaching components.
1. FLAT-WHIP (INSIDE-OUT)
2. PEEK TO FADE – FLAT- WHIP (HIGH-INSIDE-OUT)
3. CHECK SIT then #2.
As the QB spins he gets his eyes around and if he
sees the #2 sit and no defender throw the ball to
the #2’s inside shoulder now. Otherwise roll and
read.
Initially we will AUDIBLE “SIT-SIT” to tell the QB to
hit the SIT route. (seeing the ILB/PSOLB blitzing)

Power Screen Game
• Great way of attacking a defense that is
attacking our backside aggressively.
• Great goal line/short yard age play.
• Gets the BSTE involved in a very simple
scheme.
• Gets the BB the ball on the backside.

Screen Footwork
• Using the three step concept it allows us to build in a natural timing
pattern.
• Instead of HINGE/HINGE/MIRROR or SLIDE/SLIDE/MIRROR we use a
RELEASE instead of MIRROR.
• If blocking they RELEASE and up field. The most outside blocker will
release up and out looking to block the perimeter defender. The
next blockers (one or two) will head up field and block any defender
inside out.
• No one shows they go vertical to the end zone looking inside to wall
in any defender away from ball.
• Since our passer rolls away from the releasing blockers it increases
the likelihood of success of the play at the youth and middle school
level (no fear of the rush getting to the passer).

Note on Pass Protection
• We use two types of roll out pass protection.
– Half Slide/Hinge w/ back logging to the slide
– Half Turn/Hinge w/ back logging to the slide
• These two schemes compliment each other.
• Very simple to install and rep.
• Use the three step technique method in
teaching our blocking technique.

UNCOVERED: first two steps to slide play side to
the first defender and then mesh your hip with the
next blocker’s hip.
EDGE
WTE go through near shoulder
of EMLOS to slow him
WWB go through near shoulder
if possible of EMLOS to slow him
BB cross the EMLOS face to slow
him.
PULL WB: gain enough depth to
go vertical and attack the
outside arm pit of DEMLOS and
wall him inside.

SLIDE Technique
1. As the uncovered man meshes his
hips with the covered man he moves
his inside hand to the near pec.
2. The uncovered man has near arm
pit/pec as well. Both mirror and give
a little ground (if needed) to maintain
block.
3. Both linemen rotate to play side
keeping their hips meshed and the
defender centered on them.

HINGE Technique
1. First two steps are HINGE starting with
inside foot pointed at 45 degrees.
2. Never allow inside penetration. Force
the defender to go around.
3. Mirror him and use LEM once you
engage him.

Three Pass
Three vertical concept with BSWB attacking flat!
Advance Read: 3 VERT READ – OUTSIDE-INSIDE-BACKSIDE
Common Read: Low (flat) to HIGH (fade) to INSIDE (seam)
Basic Read: Low (flat) to HIGH (fade)
Great concept against an aggressive defense as we get three receivers down
field behind the defense and one into the power side flat. If the squeeze
and collapse we can get a receiver open.
