Lt. Gen. Joseph Smith<br />

1901 – 1993<br />

Lt. Gen. Smith holds the distinction of<br />

having held command of Military Air Transport<br />

Service longer than anyone else (15 Nov 1951 – 30<br />

Jun 1958). Notable successes: MATS appointed<br />

the Single Manager Operating Agency <strong>for</strong> <strong>Airlift</strong><br />

Services, this began the Civil Reserve Air Fleet<br />

(CRAF) 1951; MATS assumes Combat Cargo and<br />

Airborne Operations Mission 1958; expanded and<br />

refined the MATS route structure worldwide.<br />

A true leader and visionary.<br />

Nancy Harkness Love<br />

1914 – 1976<br />

A true pioneer in aviation, visionary, and<br />

champion <strong>for</strong> military veterans of the Womans<br />

Air<strong>for</strong>ce Surface Pilots (WASP). Flying since<br />

1930; earning Air Transport rating in 1933; test<br />

pilot from 1937-1938. She was instrumental<br />

in establishing the Women’s Auxliary Ferrying<br />

Squadron (WAFS) and merging with the WASP.<br />

She made her greatest contribution to military<br />

air transportation from 1942-1944 when ef<strong>for</strong>ts<br />

under her leaderdership resulted in the delivery<br />

of 12,650 aircraft of 77 different types.<br />

Sergeant John L. Levitow<br />

1945-2000<br />

A Hero…An Airman…A Gallant Citizen. Patriot whose<br />

selfless and heroic action saved his fellow crewmembers and<br />

aircraft from certain death and destruction. Though severely<br />

wounded, after his AC-47 “Spooky 71” was hit by enemy fire,<br />

with total disregard <strong>for</strong> personal safety he came to the aid of<br />

a fellow crewmember in extreme peril. Then, despite the loss<br />

of blood, partial use of legs, and using his body as a shield, he<br />

removed a burning flare that detonated on clearing the aircraft.<br />

Colonel Gail S. Halvorsen<br />

1920 –<br />

Legendary humanitarian, famed<br />

“Candy Bomber”<br />

of the 1948-49 Berlin <strong>Airlift</strong>, originator of<br />

“Operation Little Vittles,” airdropping candy with<br />

handkerchief parachutes.<br />

Awarded the prestigious Cheney Award <strong>for</strong> his<br />

ef<strong>for</strong>ts during the Berlin <strong>Airlift</strong>.<br />

Respected by millions <strong>for</strong> his human relief ef<strong>for</strong>ts<br />

worldwide <strong>for</strong> over fifty years.<br />

Major General Winston P.<br />

“Wimpy” Wilson<br />

1911 –1996<br />

Early leader in the Air National Guard. Rose from<br />

mechanic on the JN-4 “Jennies” in 1929 to building<br />

the Air Guard into a combat ready reserve program<br />

consisting of modern day fighter, transport and tanker<br />

aircraft as head of the ANG from 1953 to 1963 and<br />

Chief of the National Guard Bureau from 1963 to 1971.<br />

He changed the paradigm by which Reserve Forces were<br />

trained and deployed within the Total Force policy.<br />

Respected by all – from President Kennedy to all his<br />

contemporaries and suborinates.<br />

Master Sergeant Roy W. Hooe<br />

1892-1973<br />

Aviation pioneer. Regarded as the best airplane crew chief<br />

in the Army Air Corps. Hand Picked to be the airborne<br />

mechanic on the Air Coprs Fokker C-2A Trimotor, dubbed<br />

the :Question Mark” by the crew, which completed a world<br />

record enduance flight of 150 hours, 40 minutes and 15<br />

seconds. Coupled with the many positive achievements of<br />

the flight, air-to-air refueling proved to a safe and practical<br />

future operation. He was awarded the Distinguished Flying<br />

Cross by direction of President Calvin Coolidge.<br />

General Carl A. “Tooey” Spaatz<br />

1891-1974<br />

Fighter pilot in WWI. Commander of Air Forces in<br />

Europe and the Pacific in WWII. General Spaatz was<br />

the first commander of the United States Air Force.<br />

Aviation pioneer and leader in air refueling procedures<br />

while commanding the famed “Question Mark”<br />

in its refueling flight in 1929 keeping the airplane aloft<br />

<strong>for</strong> a record 150 hours, 40 minutes and<br />

15 seconds proving that aerial refueling was safe and<br />

practical <strong>for</strong> future endeavors.<br />

Awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross.<br />
