Crich Tram Museum - Roger Hume
The weather was overcast for the visit after we
had a sunny ride to Crich through the beautiful
Derbyshire countryside. There were a huge number
of trams on display with three doing the running
duties which everyone had fun riding the mile
long track. The cost for rides was ‘one old penny’
for as many rides as you liked. Each tram in the
collection had been painstakingly restored and on
the viewing platform we were able to see several
others being prepared for future use.
Macclesfield Canal - Alan Chapman
Another great day on the canal with our exclusive
fine weather. 11 members crewed the narrow boat
from Bollington to Marple. The Ring O’Bells at
Marple was as good as ever and we were all fed
very well. We had a beautiful return journey with
people sunbathing on the front of the boat.
Walkers Coach Outing to Cartmel
A full coach went to Cartmel in the Southern Lakes
and in fine weather enjoyed walking in an area
which had not been visited by the Association
Group for many years. The day was completed
with a meal at a local hostelry. Thanks to Eddie
for all his work in organising the day and also the
walks leaders Jackie Burns and Rose and Colin
Miller.
Mulberry’s
July sees the start to the Tour de France. So if
you want to pretend you are Bradley Wiggins
then come and have a go at the Col du Cat or
maybe l’Alpe d’Artiste!
The ClubAZ Cycling Section rides every Thursday come rain or
shine. The group meets at 5.15pm at the Mill Court visitors car park,
Macclesfield Works and all rides are completed at the pace of the
slowest rider.
Everyone is welcome, so if you want to discover the joy of
cycling or some local rides log on to www.clubazonline.com for a
list of forthcoming rides or contact Adrian Pickup on ext 20439
(01625 510439).
If you like to climb; It doesn’t
matter if you’re a walker that
likes to scramble or a gnarly
old Alpinist, a boulder-er with
a beanie hat and no shirt or a
Trad’ climber with more ‘jingle’
than Heidi’s goats... the ClubAZ
Climbing Section will have
something for you.
We’re encouraging those with
any interest in climbing from
beginner to expert to register
interest so we can set up a
ClubAZ climbing section. The
purpose will be for like-minded
individuals that are members
of ClubAZ to share their love of
climbing and benefit each other’s
experience. When we have
enough members we can set out what we all want from it but it could
include things like;
• A library of guide books
• Loan of popular gear that could include belay devices, clip sticks,
ropes, helmets or unusually sized Cams etc
• Training/technique advice from more experienced climbers
• Meets at the crag
• Meets after the crag
• Group discounts for shops and indoor climbing centres
• Advice on perfect holiday locations for the climber
If you like the idea then drop christopher.foster@astrazeneca.com an
e-mail and you’ll be added to the mailing list where you will be kept upto-date
with progress towards the Inaugural ClubAZ Climbing Section!
Walking Section News
Into our 51st year and still walking
In mid April ClubAZ Walkers
travelled to Sedbergh for a three
night stay in Thorns Hall.
This house, nestling under the Howgills and
overlooking the extensive grounds of Sedbergh
School, is one of the smaller properties owned
and operated by HF Holidays meaning this
time only 40 Section Members could be
accommodated with a few left on the waiting list.
The weather for the four days was kind so
members were able to experience the delights of
the Yorkshire Dales in the spring sunshine. Thanks
to volunteer leaders varied A and B walks were
organised on the Saturday and Sunday. The Dales
Way north and south of the village featured in the
walks and the climb up from the valley to the top
of Bram Rig and the Calf provided views across to
Morecambe Bay and Blackpool Tower.
The walks also took in the local villages, such
as Dent, and included architectural and historical
features such as the impressive Artengill Viaduct
and the Quaker Meeting House at Brigflatts. Also
in evidence on all walks were the local sheep and
their gambolling lambs. Some unexpected wildlife
encountered were the very friendly Alpaca’s who
were keen to join the walk and the over protective
turkey. The weekend concluded on the last
morning with a walking tour of Sedbergh in the
warm sunshine.
The section will be taking its second weekend
away of the year in October when members will
travel to the Brecon Beacons.
The summer walking programme has now
kicked off with the first evening walk and continues
with further midweek evening walks, Sunday walks
and coach trips to Kirkby Lonsdale in May and
Bolton Abbey in September.
Following on from the 50th Anniversary
celebrations in 2011 the Section has arranged
for a commemorative plaque to be attached to a
signpost, the erection of which has been funded
by ClubAZ. A walk has been organised to allow
members to view the sign in position and this will
be followed by an evening social event.
For further details of section activities or to join
the section please contact Rosemary Miller on
Archery Section News
The ClubAZ Archery Section has
now taken up its summer residence
on the old cricket pitch at Mulberry’s,
but the end of the winter season
saw a wealth of riches come the
clubs way. In the Portsmouth postal
league, the club’s A team finished
top for the second year in a row
with Val Dann and Steve Taylor
being the top scorers in the leagues
final round with scores of 529 and
558 respectively. To add to this Val
scored a very rare maximum 60 for
one end.
Two of the young archers in the
section have now either attended
or have been invited to attend the
national youth development at the
National Archery HQ at Lilleshall
congratulations to Thomas Nairn
and Patrick Waite. Patrick was also
top junior archer in the winter postal
league in February. Thomas recently
finished second at the Cheshire
County Bowmen event in the U 14’s,
all the more remarkable when some
of the other archers were two years
his senior.
In the first outdoor of the summer
season Chris Crafter, John Singleton
and Steve Taylor entered to represent
ClubAZ and in spite of the typical
summer conditions of consistent
torrential rain they finished creditably
in the pack after a gruelling day.
Despite the result it was a great
experience for the guys as they
stood shoulder to shoulder with
two GB Olympic hopefuls who were
warming up prior to the National
Championships and Olympic
selection just a few days later. Sadly
at the Nationals Linda Townsend had
a disappointing end to her bid for the
title as an equipment failure forced
her to retire.
The club continues to offer the
opportunity for new people to the
sport to come along and have a
go or to attend a full beginner’s
course. The latest ‘Have a Go’ has
just finished and the next beginners
course will be starting imminently.
If you would like to try out the
sport check out the section’s web
page on www.clubazonline.com or
contact one of the officers for further
information. The section is going
from strength to strength with new
members joining all of the time.
