1:30 p.m. – 2:30 p.m.
General Session Two
Birth Trauma: Lessons from Solace for Mothers
Presented by Sharon Storton
Solace for Mothers is an innovative network for women, families
and birth professionals to support those who have experienced
childbirth as traumatic. The past year has offered many hardwon
lessons taught by mothers themselves on the origins, the
experience and the path to healing from traumatic childbirth.
3:15 p.m. – 4:45 p.m.
Concurrent Sessions (Choose one)
201—Breastfeeding: A Partnership
Presented by Eva Bild
This session will examine the breastfeeding partnership between
the breasts, the baby and the mother and their developmental
stages. The role of each partner and their specific needs for
support will be examined as well as how the doula can be the
supportive fourth partner.
202—Part 2: Using The HUG with Young Families—
A Skill-Building Workshop
Presented by Jan Tedder
Participants will have the opportunity to practice The HUG skills
discussed in Part 1 by watching and analyzing videos, engaging
in role-playing, examining real-life case studies and learning
three HUG strategies to foster the parent-provider relationship
to enhance parent learning and confidence.
203—The Seduction of Induction
Presented by Penny Simkin
The prospect of controlling the timing of birth appeals to
pregnant women, their families, and caregivers (and even
doulas, in some ways!), so there is little resistance when
induction is suggested. Penny will review how labor is normally
started by the fetus, the differences between elective and
indicated inductions, the non-medical and medical ways that are
used to induce labor, psychological responses to induction, and
the doula’s role.
204—How Obstetricians Think: Barriers to Evidence-
Based Family-Centered Practice
Presented by Marjorie Greenfield
Doctors take pride in practices guided by scientific evidence, and
evidence is available to support many family-centered low tech
approaches. So why aren’t these practices universally followed
Learn about the training and beliefs of obstetricians so you can
improve your counseling, communication and advocacy.
205—Recognizing and Healing Birth Trauma and
Burnout in Birth Professionals
Presented by Sharon Storton
Our doula spirit can leave us prone to trauma and burnout.
Learn to recognize the signs of growing burnout, outright
trauma and mood imbalances in yourself and colleagues and
discover the keys to maintain health, joy and passion in your
calling to support women during childbirth and after.
206—Integrating Self-Hypnosis with Other Pain Relief
Methods
Presented by Phyllis Klaus
Learn how self-hypnosis can be integrated with other nonpharmacological
methods of pain relief in childbirth to reduce
fear, release tension, build confidence and enhance labor. In
this session, we will explore how the brain and its sensory/
hormonal/neurological connections are activated using imagery
and self-hypnosis to enhance labor coping skills.
5:00 p.m. – 6:00 p.m.
