Aesthetics and Form Choosing the right profile for Colorcoat Urban is crucial, particularly in relation to the size of the building. For 1-4 storey urban roofs the small standing seam, either traditionally formed or using the innovative Urban Seam profile, is ideal for creating a fantastic modern aesthetic. Urban roofs Traditionally formed or Urban Seam standing seam profile are the ideal choice for low rise and residential roofs. The roofs are finished with crisp, neat detailing to a scale that is suitable to the building size. The profiles are applicable over a substructure of a fully boarded out truss, SIPs and fully boarded out metal frame construction. Examples of building typographies include 1-4 storey houses, low rise apartments, 1-4 storey public and commercial buildings, schools and sports pavilions. Case study Creative Energy House Nottingham Efficiency and Affordability Client: BASF and the University of Nottingham Architect: Derek Trowell Architects Main contractor: J E Gibbings and Son Colorcoat ® product: Urban (traditional seam roof), Corus Plank 150 (walls) Terracotta Goosewing Grey Sustainable urban roofing Corus Colorcoat Urban roof was chosen, ahead of more traditional roofing products for this eco-build project because of its strong aesthetics, clear sustainability credentials, long life performance and highly competitive price. Profiled into the crisp traditional standing seam profile, with appropriately scaled, neat detailing was applied over a substructure of SIPS panels. The use of Colorcoat Urban gives the house an ultra low carbon roof, and because the material is compatible with rain water harvesting systems, the occupants can safely utilise the collected rain water for an increased number of uses, for example washing clothes. For this house, the Colorcoat Urban roof colour was carefully selected to complement its surroundings, and because the Terracotta incorporates special pigments for solar heat management - creating a ‘cool roof’ which helps reduce any local environmental heat island effect. Energy efficiency and affordability were the primary requirements for the house, intending to demonstrate a solution to those two major issues facing the construction industry. The house has achieved Code for Sustainable Homes Level 4. The roof easily integrates the solar thermal unit and the house design is future proofed to achieve higher levels of the code, as the roof can also support Photovoltaics. The competitive price of the whole roof has contributed to it achieving the affordable £70k build price tag for a development of 20 units.
