PICTURES 1 South Northumberland CC celebrate winning the Cockspur Cup Final 2006 after beating Bromley CC at Lord’s. 2 Action from the MCC Spirit of Cricket Under 13 National Club Championship. 3 Action from the the Portman Under 15 National Finals at Bournemouth Cricket Club. 1 Recreational Game: Review 2006 2006 saw unprecedented levels of participation in national senior and junior competitions with a noticeable rise in standards and competitiveness, reflecting improved coaching and club support. Of the 38 County Boards and the Isle of Wight, 13 different counties were represented in the finals of the U13, U14 and U15 competitions showing that this is a country-wide trend. The Cockspur Cup welcomed 355 clubs in 2006, an increase of 30 teams on 2005. The competition followed a traditional format with clubs split into 16 geographical groups. The final was contested by South Northumberland and Bromley at Lord’s on September 4th. South Northumberland’s Stephen Humble was Man of the Match hitting a rapid 30 not out and taking three wickets as Bromley were swept aside. The Portman Building Society’s U15 National Club Championship for 2006 also attracted another record entry with 1659 teams taking part, an increase of 34. Forty county winners progress to a national knock-out competition, regional finals and then a national finals day. An historic moment for the competition saw two girls in teams playing in the York Regional Final. The title went to Parley CC who took local bragging rights from Bournemouth as they followed their Dorset neighbours in winning the championships by beating Sileby Town by 20 runs in the final. The 2006 MCC ‘Spirit of Cricket’ National Club Championship attracted an entry of 1696 teams, an increase of 174 on the previous year with the Finals at Oakham School from 8th-11th August. Winners from the 39 County Boards, including the Isle of Wight, and from Scotland progressed to the National Stages, with 8 teams 2 3 ANNUAL REPORT & ACCOUNTS 2006 18

Harrow St Mary took the Title with a clear 20 point lead from Wanstead & Snaresbrook. The National Indoor Finals saw 31 teams who each won their county tournaments whittled down to a final four, via regional finals, at Lord’s on Sunday 12th March. The Final four were locals Hampstead CC, Felixstowe CC, BAT Sports CC and Longton CC, with BAT Sports taking the title. The U17 County Championship in 2006 saw the winners of Division 1 North (Yorkshire) beat the winners of Division 1 South (Sussex) by 124 runs at Headingley Carnegie. The finals of the U15 County Championship at Oundle School saw Essex run out champions, defeating Yorkshire along the way. This followed straight on from the two day Festival for the U14 County Cup which saw Wales take the cup with Northamptonshire the runners-up. The U15 Cup Finals Festival produced some excellent cricket with Surrey disposing of Lancashire with some ease in the final. The ECB U13 County Cup was also held at Oundle School in August. Both semi-finals extremely close affairs but Staffordshire defeated Essex to meet Yorkshire, who overcame Somerset, in the final. The final was another closely-fought contest with Staffordshire coming out on top by a margin of 10 runs.
