INSIDE CHARLESTON CATHOLIC HIGH SCHOOL
Teaching character, compassion, and confidence to the youth of West Virginia for over 80 years
Dear parents:
Thanksgiving came early this year and the next few weeks will roll by far too quickly. There is so
much to get done before Christmas break, but I have no doubt that everything will be accomplished in
fine fashion. In addition to exams and all the classroom instructional activities that fill our days, we call
special attention to the meaning of Advent. Through prayer, study, and action, this season of the Church’s
year can help us open our minds and hearts to the daily coming of Christ into our lives and our world.
Each school day in December during morning prayer, our Pax Christi group offers for our consideration
an “Advent Action,” a simple act that each of us is encouraged to do at some point during the day as a
way to grow in holiness during the Advent season. Our Advent Actions flow from a theme in the
scripture readings of the day. The first action was to perform a kind act for someone without trying to be
noticed or appreciated. Perhaps another action will be to use our words to bring out the best in others and
to show the best of ourselves.
Thornton Wilder, American novelist, playwright, and Pulitzer Prize winner, remarked that, “We
can only be said to be alive in those moments when our hearts are conscious of our treasures.” His words
reflect the atmosphere we work hard to create at the corner of Virginia Street and Leon Sullivan Way. The
faculty, staff, and I are frequently touched by our students’ good hearts. They not only show their concern
for each other and for those who are disadvantaged or suffering in our world, but they also pay attention
to the feelings of our faculty and staff. All of us benefit from the nurturing that transcends individuals
and includes each person within our school walls.
I am continually reminded that Charleston Catholic is much more than a building. It is a place
where the concepts of faith and justice are lived, not just talked about, and where young people can grow
intellectually, spiritually, and emotionally. At Charleston Catholic, we believe that an investment in today’s
youth will markedly impact the future – theirs and ours. By now you will have received our annual appeal
letter. It was sent to you with the belief that you, too, recognize that a Charleston Catholic education is an
investment that pays its rewards many times over. Tuition and fees do not cover the costs associated with
providing the high quality programs offered through our school. We depend upon the generosity of
parents, alumni, and other supporters to help keep a Charleston Catholic education affordable for all.
Your support is greatly appreciated by the students – now and in the future – who will benefit from your
generosity.
May the upcoming weeks be filled with appreciation for those who nurture us personally,
intellectually, and spiritually. In the busy moments, may we take time to reflect upon our families, our
priorities, our attitudes, and our beliefs. May our hearts always be “conscious of our treasures.”
Warmest regards during this Christmas season,
Debra K. Sullivan, Principal
CONDOLENCES – We express our sympathy to a number of our students and their families who have lost
loved ones recently. May the souls of the departed rest in peace: Trish and Marlo Weisberg’s paternal grandfather,
Domenic and Anthony Cippolone’s paternal grandmother, and Scott and Claire Standish’s maternal grandfather.
Please keep these families in your thoughts and prayers.
NEW THEOLOGY DEPARTMENT MEMBER -- Molly Linehan will join the CCHS theology department on
January 7 as Campus Ministry Coordinator. Molly's primary focus will be to build upon and expand the vibrant
things related to faith in action that are already in place at Charleston Catholic. She will be collaborating with
theology teachers in service outreach activities, liturgies, retreats, peer ministry, and special projects. Ms. Linehan,
with an undergraduate theology degree from Xavier University and a graduate degree in Islam and Muslim Christian
Relations from Georgetown University, comes to us with a rich background of experiences including campus
ministry at high school and college levels as well as job-related travels to Uganda and El Salvador. She looks
forward to working with students of all faith traditions to advance peace and justice in our diverse world.
Please join and give Ms. Linehan a good old fashioned Charleston Catholic welcome!
THANKS FROM ERIC BAILEY, ATHLETIC FACILITY MANAGER -- “I would like to thank everyone
from the bottom of my newly rebuilt heart for the wonderful food that was provided to my family during my stay in
the hospital. My entire family is very grateful and touched by the show of care and support we received during the
past couple of weeks. It is very moving to experience the power of the CCHS community first hand and I am very
proud and thankful to be a very small part of it. Thank you so much! Eric” We look forward to welcoming Mr.
Bailey back soon!
SECOND QUARTER PROGRESS REPORTS ARE ENCLOSED – Please use teacher-provided grade sheet
printouts to give you specific information about grades. Are assignments being submitted (0 out of “points possible”
is a big clue) Are assignments being turned in on time (look for half the “points possible” – one day late is worth
half, submitted after one day is worth 0 points) How are your children doing on quizzes and tests There is still
time for students to “upgrade” their grades before the semester ends if they take a very serious approach to address
deficiencies. Exams are scheduled for December 19 – 21 (all students) and on December 18 for part of the regular
school day (high school only). The first semester closes on Friday, January 18, 2013, two weeks after we return from
Christmas break. Upon our return from Christmas vacation, teachers will cover additional coursework, give tests,
etc. which will be calculated in second quarter grades and will affect the first semester average. As of today, if
students are not where they want to be (or should be) academically, time remains for students to improve grades. If
you aren’t checking the website moodle, you might want to do so to get information regarding important classspecific
dates.
FIRST SEMESTER EXAM SCHEDULE – Exam time is quickly approaching! Keep in mind that we
administer exams before Christmas, but the semester does not close until January 18. From January 7
through 18, teachers will be covering new material which will be calculated into the second quarter and first
semester grade. All classes have exams and exams must be taken at the scheduled times. If we have a two-hour
delay due to weather, we will start that day’s exams at 10 a.m. and school will be dismissed at 1:15 p.m. If
school is cancelled on any exam day due to weather, exams for that day will take place on the next day the
school is open, even if it means pushing exams to January 7. IN THE EVENT OF ANY WEATHER-
RELATED CHANGES, CHECK THE SCHOOL WEBSITE OR TWITTER FEED FOR UP-TO-THE-
MINUTE INFORMATION. Students should prepare for exams by reviewing past tests and quizzes, using study
guides, rereading notes and homework/class assignments, reworking math problems, and so on. First semester
report cards will be mailed no later than Monday, January 28, 2013.
THOUGHTS ON MIDDLE SCHOOL EXAMS – Semester exams for middle school students serve an
instructional purpose; namely, helping students learn how to take exams so they are better prepared for high school.
For this reason, middle school exams make up only a small percentage of the overall grade. Focus your attention on
quarter grades to get a more accurate assessment of your child’s progress. Also, to assist your children in doing their
best, please make sure they have adequate rest and a good breakfast before coming to school each day.

IMMUNIZATIONS -- Beginning this school year, the West Virginia Department of Health and Human
Resources requires students in public and private schools in grades 7 and 12 to have additional immunizations or
they will not be allowed to begin school in August. Therefore, CCHS must have an updated copy of the
immunization records, which include these vaccines, on file in the school office in order to allow students to begin
school in August 2013. Students entering 7 th and 12 th grade must have 1 dose of the Tdap vaccine and 1 dose of
the meningitis vaccine. If the 12 th grade student received a meningitis vaccine before his/her 16 th birthday, he/she is
required to have a second dose of the vaccine at this time.
longer using, please contact Bill Gillispie. Our national anthem can sound better!
NOT USING THAT CLOTHES RACK (AKA TREADMILL) – If you have a treadmill that you have
relegated to a corner of the room, it could find a new home in the CCHS weight room. Please call Bill Gillispie if
you have one that you’d like to donate.
INTERNET SAFETY – David Hoffmann, technology guru here at CCHS, has been speaking to 7 th graders
during their exploratory classes. Talk to your children about his insights and suggestions regarding privacy issues
involved with social networking sites such as Facebook and Twitter. Some of the true stories he shares with them in
his “It’s Public” remarks are enough to make some students shut down their accounts! And just a heads up – some
middle schoolers remarked that they have Facebook accounts that their parents don’t know about. Worth checking
into. . .
CATHOLIC SCHOOLS WEEK -- Please mark your calendars for the week of January 28th-February 1st!
During Catholic Schools Week each winter, the PVA reaches out to the community around us and
participates in acts of community service. This year we are expanding the charities included in our donations. We
will have a different organization each day and will identify specific items needed for that group. The five charities
will be Gabriel Project, Trinity’s Table, Manna Meal, Sojourners, and Covenant House. Once again we will be
sending out a postcard as the time approaches with the specific items needed each day. If anyone would like to
volunteer to help that week please call Penny Gennette, 389-8213 or Diane Gouhin, 415-9710.

Additional Wednesdays will be added to the end of the season if trips are cancelled due to weather. If school is
CLAY COUNTY CHRISTMAS PROJECT-- By the time you receive this newsletter, the Clay County
Christmas party will have taken place (Saturday, December 8). 174 families with 450 children were involved in this
year’s project, a proactive way to provide direct services to needy children. As in past years, participating children
attend our party at The Church of the Risen Lord in Maysel and have their photos taken with Santa, enjoy cookies,
receive stockings from the elves, and pick up their bundles of Christmas gifts and food boxes. Many thanks to
Kathy Linkenogger and Risen Lord parishioners for working with CCHS for 26 years to host this party.
Many thanks to our students, families, faculty and staff, and numerous other supporters who helped make
our Clay County Christmas so successful. Children’s gifts, stockings, stocking stuffers, and food boxes filled
CCHS’s classrooms last week in preparation for the trip to Risen Lord parish. Sacred Heart Grade School children,
their families, and faculty and staff continued their wonderful tradition of involvement by providing over 200 (wow!)
food boxes for distribution to families at the party. We extend special thanks this year to everyone who donated
extra items, including “adopting” extra children. Additional thanks go out to Dickinson Gould (CCHS class of
1995), president of Buzz Products, for donating trucks and drivers to transport the goods to the party in Maysel.
We also, thank Russ Miller, unofficial (but really official!) CCHS photographer who helped our students take
spectacular pictures of the children with Santa, and to Mark and Shirley Lycan for working wonders with
organizational details including processing information on all the children and their families and preparing all the
cards and lists that keep the entire operation moving smoothly both at the school-level and during the party. Our
families’ support of this project is what makes it work. The generosity of our Charleston Catholic community is
always heartwarming and humbling. Thank you for your generosity to the children of Clay County!
UNITED WAY – Did you know that you may designate Charleston Catholic High School as a recipient of your
donation to the United Way Pledge cards include a place on the back where you can earmark your dollars to go to
KROGER CARES PROGRAM -- Charleston Catholic High School is selling $5 Kroger "gift" cards which are
linked to our school for fundraising. To support CCHS on an ongoing basis, start by buying the gift card in the
school office. You can then add money to your card (“reload”) at the Kroger customer service desk or you can ask
a cashier to reload before you check out with groceries. You can use your card each time you buy groceries or gas at
Kroger or any Kroger affiliate across the country. Every four weeks, Kroger reviews Charleston Catholic High
School's account and sends a check for 5% of the money that has been "reloaded" onto the cards. This has been a
very successful fundraiser for schools and churches across the country and we hope you will consider using the
Kroger Gift card as a simple but effective way to help support our school.
SOCIAL ACTIVITIES – Help your child discover a variety of age-appropriate leisure-time activities to enjoy with
friends, such as bowling, ice skating, going to movies, watching televised athletic events at each others’ houses,
playing Frisbee, cooking, and skiing. Encourage your child to see “social life” on a broader level, not as going to a
bunch of “parties.” Habits learned now will affect a child’s outlook for a lifetime.
UNIFORMS – Christmas vacation is a great time to check the “health” of uniforms. Check to make sure that pant
hems are not frayed, that colors are not washed out, etc. Please make sure that your children are properly attired
when they leave home. Students know that non-uniform clothing items, if worn during the school day, will be taken
and returned in June.
MEDICATIONS –REMINDER: When students need to take prescription medication at school, the medicine
must be sent to the office with a doctor’s order and the appropriate diocesan forms and in a plastic zip-lock bag
with the student’s name clearly labeled. Also, any medications kept at school for various reasons – e.g., asthma,
allergies, etc. – should be sent to the office in a bag with the doctor’s order and an allergy or other medical plan, if
applicable. Over the counter medicine such as Advil, cough drops, etc. need to be in a plastic bag with student’s
name clearly marked and with specific information stating when such items should be dispensed.
A REMINDER ABOUT GOOD SPORTSMANSHIP AT THE BEGINNING OF THE WINTER
SPORTS SEASON – Phone calls complimenting our students and parents at athletic events are always a joy to
receive. However, phone calls from parents or administrators from other schools criticizing CCHS fans’ behavior
are always disheartening. All of us are judged by a few. Please show good sportsmanship and, if you see someone
else being unsportsmanlike, become part of the solution. Let’s work on this together to make it a great season!
SPEAKING OF SPORTSMANSHIP – The SSAC asked that all schools communicate this message to families:
“The WVSSAC and the National Federation of State High School Associations require officials to enforce
sportsmanship rules. High School athletics emphasizes positive values while participants work hard to create a sense
of teamwork, respect, responsibility and perspective. Good behavior is expected from all and that misconduct will
not be tolerated. Let competition reflect mutual respect among all participants, officials and fans.
Good sportsmanship is learned, practiced and executed. Respect for the opponent, spectators, coaches and
officials are a must at all levels of athletics and activity programs. The WVSSAC asks everyone’s cooperation in
order to make each game, match or event memorable for all the right reasons.
Your ticket to an interscholastic athletic event is a privilege, a privilege to watch youngsters learn on the
field of competition. One of the lessons taught to players is one a spectator can learn as well – that of good
sportsmanship.
While the scoreboard reveals the winner of interscholastic contest, the real winners are those who treat
competition as a game and not a war, who show genuine concern for an injured player, those who accept all
decisions of the officials. Sportsmanship is contagious, is yours worth catching.”
ADVERTISING OPPORTUNITY – We continue to expand our “wall of supporters” at the athletic facility. If
you’d like to advertise your business and show your support for CCHS, please consider getting involved in our
banner program. To learn more and order a banner for your business, contact Kathy Crain at (304)541-4182.
CCHS BASEBALL TRIANA FIELD GAME DAY SPONSOR – Please consider sponsoring a high school
baseball home game at UC’s Triana Field. Game Day sponsorship is $175 per game for the Triana Field rental
fee. Contact our Athletic Director, Bill Gillispie, for a sponsor form. Forms are also available from the school
website.

is ill or will miss school for any reason, please notify the school office by 8:30 a.m. In addition, at the end of the
semester students will have to stay after school to make up any time missed during excessive absences/tardies.
SCHOOL CLOSINGS/DELAYS DUE TO SNOW/ICE – –Although some of us may be holding out for a
mild winter, all of us must be prepared to deal with whatever comes. Here’s a brief reminder of the CCHS weather
until 9:30 to give staff time to get to school. Please do not drop off your children before 9:30!
