About
us
The Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (CIArb)
is the professional home of dispute resolvers.
As an international not-for-profit organisation,
our mission is to promote the use of alternative
dispute resolution (ADR) as the
preferred means of resolving disputes
throughout the world.
We also provide support to our qualified, active and highly
regarded membership. Our members include arbitrators,
construction adjudicators and mediators, all working to resolve
disputes in a flexible, non-court environment.
We pride ourselves on being a truly global network, with over
12,000 members working in sectors as diverse as finance,
construction, oil and gas and agriculture in over 110 countries
worldwide. Many are active ADR professionals, while others
become members for their own personal development or to
enhance their careers in a range of areas including quantity
surveying, civil engineering, architecture, law, academia, HR and
project management.
We provide dedicated professional guidance to our members
through world-renowned training, conferences, events, research
and publications. With nearly 40 branches worldwide, we can
ensure that all of our members have access to CIArb training
and benefits, wherever they are in the world. Most importantly,
CIArb’s international reputation and academic rigour provide

Our members
At CIArb we understand that our members come to us from a
great variety of backgrounds. We therefore offer different grades
of membership depending on your particular skills, knowledge
and experience. With the help of our world-renowned training
scheme, there are many opportunities to upgrade to another level of
membership as your ADR experience develops.

CIArb Associate (ACIArb)
This entry-level Introductory Certificate
qualification is ideal for people with
some knowledge of ADR who are keen to
take the first step in a dispute resolution
career or to enhance their own personal
and professional development.
If you have some practical experience
of ADR, or have completed a CIArbaccredited
academic course, you may
be able to become an Associate without
taking an introductory course.
To qualify to become an Associate:
• Pass one of CIArb’s Introductory
courses in Arbitration, Mediation or
Adjudication; or
• Complete a recognised equivalent
course; or
• Demonstrate the level of experience
in the relevant field as required by
CIArb

CIArb Member (MCIArb)
If you already have some ADR experience
and are looking to gain an internationally
recognised qualification, this Advanced
Certificate qualification is right for you.
If you are not an Associate but are legally
qualified and have some experience of
Arbitration, CIArb offers an Accelerated
Route to Membership course.
To qualify to become a Member:
• Become an Associate and pass
Modules 1 and 2 of CIArb’s training
programmes; or
• Pass CIArb’s Accelerated Route to
Membership programme (Arbitration
only); or
• Complete a recognised equivalent
course; or
• Demonstrate the level of experience in
the relevant field as required by CIArb

CIArb Fellow (FCIArb)
This high-level Diploma qualification
is designed for experienced dispute
resolution practitioners looking for
international recognition for their skills.
If you have a professional legal
background and significant arbitration
or adjudication experience, CIArb offers
an Accelerated Route to Fellowship
course. For experienced practitioners, our
Experienced Practitioner Route may offer
you entry at Fellowship, depending on your
academic legal qualifications.
To qualify to become a Fellow:
• Become a CIArb Member and pass
modules 3 and 4 of CIArb’s training
programmes; or
• Pass the Accelerated Route to
Fellowship Programme and Module
4 of CIArb’s arbitration/adjudication
training programmes; or
• Pass the Diploma in International
Commercial Arbitration and Module
4 of CIArb’s arbitration training
programmes; or
• Complete a recognised equivalent
course.
In all cases, applicants must also attend
a Peer interview.

Chartered Arbitrator
Chartered Arbitrator status is a
benchmark of exceptional experience
and knowledge in the field of
arbitration. To apply, you must fulfil
certain criteria. This includes being
a CIArb Fellow and producing a
schedule of appointments and CPD
for the past three years as well as
documentary evidence of making at
least two reasoned awards, directions
or judgments.

Student Affiliateship
CIArb offers a student affiliateship
scheme for all students with an interest
in ADR, studying at universities
throughout the world, for an affordable
annual subscription fee.

CIArb’s Young Member Group (YMG)

How to
join us
There are two routes to CIArb membership at any
grade: experience/knowledge and qualifications.

Experience
At CIArb we recognise the value of professional
experience. Join us at any grade by demonstrating
sufficient knowledge and experience of ADR to the
level of our assessments.

Qualifications
Many of our members join us by completing a course
of study offered or approved by CIArb:
• CIArb offers a full range of courses through
its Pathways training programme which
leads to CIArb membership at every grade,
including fast-track routes for highly qualified
practitioners. For more information about CIArb
training, see our CIArb Training brochure or
visit www.ciarb.org
• CIArb also approves and accredits training and
qualifications provided by other organisations.
If you have completed one of these courses,
you could be eligible to join CIArb at the
appropriate grade without any further training.
