The name of the nunnery is spelled out in candle light by nuns, monks, and friends<br />

Opening the First Nunnery<br />

in the Holy Land of Sarnath:<br />

Orgyen Samye Chökhor Ling<br />

ON OCTOBER 31ST, 2006,<br />

students journeyed to<br />

the Venerable Khenpos,<br />

Ani Lorraine, and five<br />

India to consecrate their<br />

nunnery in Deer Park. Their arrival at the<br />

monastery in Sarnath—Padma Samye<br />

Chökhor Ling—was highlighted by the<br />

rhythmic playing of cymbals, streaming<br />

tones of long horns and drums, and<br />

rows of Rinpoches’ students lined up<br />

waving katags and burning incense.<br />

With the inauguration rapidly<br />

approaching, everyone’s attention soon<br />

turned to completing the main projects<br />

and preparations for the Rinpoches’<br />

nunnery, Orgyen Samye Chökhor Ling,<br />

“The Land of the Sky Dancer’s<br />

Inconceivable Turning of the Wheel of<br />

Dharma.” The nunnery is situated on<br />

four pristine acres of land filled with<br />

mango trees, located on a quiet back<br />

road on the northwest corner of Deer<br />

Park, where the Buddha first turned the<br />

Wheel of Dharma. Buddha Shakyamuni<br />

himself prophesied that the future buddha,<br />

Buddha Maitreya, would be born in<br />

the general area of Deer Park.<br />

Through the kindness and generosity of<br />

<strong>Pema</strong> Trime of the Vajrakilaya Foundation<br />

and the numerous contributions of Ani<br />

Lorraine, <strong>Pema</strong> Gyaltsen, Dr. Yeshe Lodoe,<br />

Thinley Gyatso, and Karma Gongde, this<br />

very sacred land became a part of the<br />

<strong>Padmasambhava</strong> Buddhist Center almost<br />

a decade ago. Manager Nyima’s continuous<br />

supervision and overseeing of the projects<br />

at both the Nunnery and the Miracle<br />

Stupa were indispensible, like a force<br />

behind their completion. Khenpo<br />

Tsewang Rinpoche reflects on the tremendous<br />

efforts of sangha members at that<br />

time: “Even though money had already<br />

been donated for land in Deer Park, if Ani<br />

Lorraine had not worked so hard with such<br />

tireless, joyful effort, I do not think we<br />

would have gotten this land.”
