National Animal ID is not new in the
United States
Animal ID has been an integral part of
animal disease monitoring,
surveillance, and eradication
programs for many years.

Why NAIS is needed
• Help safeguard animal health through disease
management, surveillance, monitoring, and
eradication
• Animal health is the focus
• Answer 3 important questions during disease
detection:

– “Where has the infected animal been”
– “What other animals have been exposed”
– “What additional premises/ animals are at risk of exposure”

What NAIS provides
• Standardization for information systems and
opportunity for official ID to work with industrybased
programs
• As program diseases are eradicated, provides
opportunity for producers to participate in animal
health safeguarding efforts before an animal
disease event or outside a specific disease
program

Goals of NAIS
• Determine size, scope & source of outbreak
• Minimize scope and expense
• Limit market impact with a timely response

Impact on food safety
