REPORT Patients and/or Carers The consumer advocate on the student training ward interviewed the patients each week and provided feedback on this to the students along with a written report to staff. Formal patient satisfaction surveys were also provided consisting of questions about their experience with both staff and students on the ward. Ratings were on a 5-point Likert from very dissatisfied to very satisfied. Fourteen completed surveys were analysed and revealed that the vast majority of patients were happy with the care they received as indicated in Table 4. Conclusion The Curtin-RPH Student Training Ward was a very successful initiative with feedback from staff, students and clients being overwhelmingly positive. Both quantitative and qualitative analysis revealed there were significant changes in the students’ ability and comfort in working in collaboration with the team, knowledge of their own and other professions’ roles and responsibilities, and understanding of the importance of patient-centred care. A great deal of time and effort was required to get the initiative started, with documentation of the project, the partnership between the university and the hospital, the risks and the evaluation process. Once the first students arrived, the ward ran very smoothly. The success of the STW has sparked interest by staff on other wards who are keen to run a similar student training model, and the hospital is currently exploring funding options for the ward so that it is sustainable into the future. The Western Australian Department of Health have also expressed interest in rolling out student training wards in other metropolitan and rural sites.
