6 the millennium prize Clean water is vital for life. The body of an adult human being consists of approximately 70 percent of water. Yet almost 1.2 billion people have no access to safe drinking water. Technical progress alone cannot bring clean water to everybody, but its contribution is crucial. The development in water purification technology touches the lives of millions of ordinary women and men, in villages and in large cities, all around the world.

In particular, the prize seeks to highlight innovations that will assist and enrich our everyday lives into the future. The end of the second millennium was largely defined by industrialisation. Today it is technological development that prompts the most significant improvements in quality of life. This is not blind belief in technology. It is indeed necessary to assess novel innovations critically as they often entail both opportunities and risks. Nevertheless, new technologies are required to respond to such global challenges as the lack of clean water and the threat of climate change. Technology is also part of our everyday life, making it easier, safer and more sustainable. For example, energy and information technol ogies are among the resources we use daily, often taking them for granted. Quality of Life as the Touchstone As the pace of technical change accelerates, dialogue between technological and humane values becomes increasingly important. It is the mission of the Millennium Technology Prize to promote quality of life and sustainability as the ultimate benchmarks of technological development. If the vision is fulfilled, equality between people and improvement in quality of life become increasingly central values in research and development.
