HAMILTON FOOD AND BEVERAGE Sector Overview in ONTARIO The food and beverage industry plays a significant role in Ontario’s economy. Home to more than 3,652 companies, which employ more than 107,000 people, it generates almost $32 billion in sales annually. In 2004, 34.6% of all the food and beverage manufacturing exports in Canada originated in Ontario with much of it going to the United States. Food processing is the third most important manufacturing industry in Ontario behind transportation equipment, electrical and electronic products manufacturing. Ontario produces more than 200 agricultural commodities, a diversity that is unmatched in most parts of the world. The food and beverage manufacturing sector advances Ontario’s international reputation for innovation and quality, and makes it a world leader in food technology, research and development.
