Year In Review<br />
JANUARY<br />
• At the World Economic Forum, held in Davos, Switzerland, rock<br />
musician Bono and Bobby Shriver of DATA (Debt, Aid, Trade,<br />
AFRICA) announce a new corporate initiative to create a<br />
sustainable and profitable brand – (PRODUCT) red – which will<br />
raise funds for and awareness of the <strong>Global</strong> <strong>Fund</strong> and the fight<br />
against HIV/AIDS in Africa. <strong>The</strong> money generated by the sale of<br />
(RED) products will support <strong>Global</strong> <strong>Fund</strong>-financed programs<br />
which positively impact the lives of women and children affected<br />
by HIV/AIDS in Africa.<br />
FEBRUARY<br />
• <strong>The</strong> <strong>Global</strong> <strong>Fund</strong> eForum is launched to give Partnership Forum<br />
participants an additional opportunity to contribute to dialogue<br />
and debate online and to suggest broad policy recommendations<br />
to the Board of the <strong>Global</strong> <strong>Fund</strong>. <strong>The</strong> Partnership Forum process<br />
is an integral part of the <strong>Global</strong> <strong>Fund</strong>’s key structures. It gathers a<br />
broad range of stakeholders to discuss <strong>Global</strong> <strong>Fund</strong> performance<br />
and to make recommendations on its strategy and effectiveness.<br />
MARCH<br />
• Lieve Fransen, Head of Human and Social Development for the<br />
European Commission’s Directorate General of Development, is<br />
elected by a unanimous Board vote to be the new Vice-Chair of<br />
the Board of the <strong>Global</strong> <strong>Fund</strong>, replacing Michel Kazatchkine who<br />
resigned in January.<br />
• In an intensive two-week collaborative campaign involving the<br />
Niger Ministry of Health, the International Federation of Red<br />
Cross and Red Crescent Societies and the <strong>Global</strong> <strong>Fund</strong>, more than<br />
two million mosquito nets are distributed to mothers of children<br />
under age five throughout Niger.
