tella <strong>and</strong> araki houses with significant number of FSWs. In addition, there are several ch<strong>at</strong> <strong>and</strong> shisha<br />
houses. All these circumstances contribute to high transmission of HIV/AIDS. Substances such as ch<strong>at</strong>,<br />
shisha <strong>and</strong> hashish are highly valued <strong>and</strong> used especially among foreigner residents (mainly<br />
Jamaicans/Rastafarians) <strong>and</strong> the use of these substances has become very common among the residents<br />
of the town. According to the respondents hashish is known as “brain food” by the Jamaicans <strong>and</strong><br />
“Yechinkil<strong>at</strong> Migib” by the n<strong>at</strong>ives, <strong>and</strong> using it is perceived as something good <strong>and</strong> normal.<br />

There are about 600 FSWs in Shashamene. Most of them oper<strong>at</strong>e in hotels, bars, <strong>and</strong> nightclubs loc<strong>at</strong>ed<br />
on the main road to Awassa <strong>and</strong> in Kebeles 04 <strong>and</strong> 07. Day laborers, drivers <strong>and</strong> their assistants,<br />
married men, businessmen, <strong>and</strong> foreigners are among their frequent clients. In-school <strong>and</strong> out-of-school<br />
youth have sex in exchange for money, facilit<strong>at</strong>ed by brokers. This occurs especially between<br />
newcomers/foreigners <strong>and</strong> the youth.<br />
