Lancaster and Morecambe
When it comes to matters of taste, this part of Lancashire will leave you hungry for
more. Great country pubs, top quality restaurants and food shops, where the
shelves are stacked with local produce, are what the area’s building a reputation for.
Hotpot and black pudding are two well known ingredients of Lancashire’s rich
culinary tradition. But don’t forget Morecambe Bay shrimps, the artisan cheeses, the
beef and lamb, the sausages and the smoked foods. This mouth-watering produce
is first port of call for many of the good chefs working here.
Well known pubs and restaurants include places like the Highwayman Inn at Nether
Burrow, Foodworks at Lancaster House Hotel, The Borough in Lancaster and The
Priory at Scorton. As for shops and producers, try the Port of Lancaster
Smokehouse at Glasson Dock, Baxter’s in Morecambe for Morecambe Bay potted
shrimps, Foragers Farm Shop at Carnforth and tea and coffee specialists J Atkinson
& Co in Lancaster. Buy something to take home and you’ll have a taste of
Lancashire when your holiday is over.
Taste Wyre
Enjoy an array of locally sourced seasonal produce, the finest food in Wyre,
guaranteed to set taste buds racing all year round. The area prides itself on getting
food from the fields, farms and trawlers fresh to customers’ plates.
There are no fewer than seven Lancashire cheesemakers situated in and around a
10 mile (16km) radius of the Forest of Bowland Area of Outstanding Natural
Beauty. All make Lancashire cheese in the traditional method using Lancashire milk.
In most cases they are 2nd, 3rd and 4th generation family businesses. Dew-Lay in
Garstang is a 2nd generation family cheesemaker producing Garstang Blue, a Jamie
Oliver favourite and the only blue Lancashire cheese. Why not follow the Crumbly
Lancashire Cheese Trail
If you want fine dining without the effort of cooking for yourself head to one of the
area’s Taste Lancashire quality assured restaurants. Visit fantastic farm shops,
discover homemade ice creams at Wallings of Cockerham and look out for the
‘pasture to plate’ activities combining a farm walk and visit to a local cheesemaker.
Take the best local fish and visit the North West’s award-winning fish and chip
restaurant - Seniors at Thornton. Not forgetting the annual Oyster Festival at Guys
Thatched Hamlet, a fun food themed festival for all.
