ANZAC Spirit Pilgrimage
9 days/8 nights - Departs 22 April 2015
Day 1 – Wed 22 April: Arrive Istanbul
Arrive at Istanbul Ataturk Airport where hotel coach
transfers are available. The remainder of the day is
free to explore this amazing city. Stay two nights in
Istanbul. Dinner is included at a local restaurant (D)
Day 2 – Thu 23 April: Istanbul
Experience a full-day guided tour of Istanbul
including visits to the Hippodrome, Blue Mosque,
Underground Cistern, Topkapi Palace and Grand
Bazaar. We then delve into 1000 years of Turkish
military history at the fascinating Harbiye Military
Museum before attending a memorable concert of
marching music from musicians dressed in traditional
uniforms. Dinner tonight is included. (BD)
Day 3 – Fri 24 April: Gallipoli
Spend the morning at your leisure before departing
for Gallipoli this afternoon. We stop en route for
refreshments and a meal, during which you will
meet our ANZAC historians for an informative
presentation and details of what to expect
tomorrow. Upon arrival at Gallipoli we find a suitable
viewpoint and wait in the open for the following
morning’s Dawn Service. Please be prepared to sit
out in the open throughout the night. (BD)
Day 4 –- Sat 25 April: ANZAC Day Services*
– Canakkale
A boxed breakfast will be supplied. The Dawn
Service commences at 5:30am followed later in
the morning by the Australian and New Zealand
services. At the conclusion of the commemorative
services we join our coach, cross the Dardanelles
by ferry, and arrive in Canakkale for a 4 night stay.
Stop for lunch en route. (BLD)
Day 5 – Sun 26 April: Canakkale
Visit the remains of Troy, the 5000-year-old city
made famous by Homer’s Iliad. This afternoon
we will join our historians for a captivating
presentation on the Gallipoli campaign and details
of the coming days exploration of Gallipoli. (BD)
Day 6 – Mon 27 April: Gallipoli
Cross the Dardanelles by ferry to discover some
of the Gallipoli Peninsula’s most important sites.
Starting at ANZAC Cove, we will visit the Lone
Pine Australian Memorial, the Nek, Shrapnel
Gully, Quinn’s Post, Shell Green and the Chunuk
Bair New Zealand Memorial. After lunch we
continue into the Helles Sector to visit Kilitbahir
Castle, the Turkish Martyrs’ Memorial, the French
Memorial, V-Beach Cemetery and the Helles
Memorial. Our historians and guides will provide
detailed information on battle sites, strategies
and outcomes throughout the day. (BLD)
Day 7 – Tue 28 April: Gallipoli
Today we head for the Suvla Sector of Gallipoli
to visit Fisherman’s Hut, Hill 10, Suvla Point,
Chocolate Hill, Green Hill, Scimitar Hill, the
Anafarta Guns and Bigali – the village where
Turkish commander Kemal Ataturk once lived.
Return to Canakkale to visit the Military Museum
and the imposing Cimenlik Castle. (BLD)
Day 8 – Wed 29 April: Canakkale – Istanbul
Return to Istanbul to spend your final night in the
vibrant Turkish capital. (B)
Day 9 – Thu 30 April: Depart Istanbul
The tour ends after breakfast at the hotel with
a transfer to Istanbul’s Ataturk Airport. (B)
