The wedding venue Thank you for considering Hobbiton ® as the location for one of the most important days of your life… your wedding day. Hobbiton ® is a location like no other, creating a unique and memorable experience for your special day. We have created a beautiful location for your ceremony in amongst our gardens. Complete with authentic canvas tents, the gardens are surrounded by some of the most impressive Hobbit holes, lending to a fantastic celebration atmosphere. We offer two different venues in which to hold the reception. Dine in the exquisitely crafted Green Dragon ® , as seen in The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit film trilogies. We also offer our party marquee, created in the same style as the unique canvas marquee seen in The Fellowship of the Ring. Our professional function team have many years’ experience in planning and hosting weddings. Our team appreciates that every bride and groom have differing expectations so we will work with you to tailor a day to remember. The story of Hobbiton ® In September 1998 Peter Jackson and New Line Cinema ‘discovered’ the Alexander farm during an aerial search for suitable film sites to portray Hobbiton in the film The Lord of the Rings. The fantastic views and rolling countryside of the Alexander farm closely resembled that of Middle-earth as described by JRR Tolkien. The farm was ideal. The large established pine tree, later to become known as the ‘party tree’, was already perfectly placed in front of the lake. The surrounding rolling farmland was untouched by 20th century clutter such as roads, buildings or power lines. Site construction started in March 1999. Initially this involved heavy earth moving machinery provided by the New Zealand Army. Total site construction took nine months. Throughout construction and filming all activity on the site was kept under strict security due to commercial restraints by the movie company. Filming commenced in December 1999 and continued for three months. At its peak 400 people were ‘on site’ including Sir Peter Jackson, Sir Ian McKellen (Gandalf), Elijah Wood (Frodo Baggins), Sir Ian Holm (Bilbo Baggins), Martin Free (young Bilbo Baggins) and Sean Astin (Sam Gamgee). In 2009 the set was rebuilt for the filming of the three films based on The Hobbit. Now the sets have been permanently constructed and a joint venture owned by Sir Peter Jackson and the Alexander family has been established to operate tours to the Hobbiton movie set.
