He has asked Canon Gerard Conroy, parish priest of St Patrick’s, Dumbarton, to take on the additional task of animating and resourcing the new evangelisation across the diocese. His work will build on the contribution made by the former pastoral office, while bringing renewed focus and purpose to the task. Since taking up office six months ago, Archbishop Tartaglia has singled out the work of evangelisation as a key pastoral priority, involving the whole Church in Glasgow. At his installation last September, he said: “I want us all to embrace the new evangelisation as the special challenge of our lifetime; to Canon Gerard Conroy Fr John Keenan Fr Ross Campbell witness to each other and to the wider community the saving message of the love and mercy of God in Jesus Christ in all its fullness.” In another priority area, the Archbishop has appointed Fr John Keenan as Vocations Director of the Archdiocese. He succeeds Mgr John Gilmartin whom the Archbishop thanked for “all the fine work” he has done in encouraging vocations to the diocesan priesthood over the past ten years. Fr Keenan, who is chaplain at Glasgow University and parish priest of St Patrick’s, Anderston, will be assisted in the vocations role by Fr Ross Campbell, Glasgow’s youngest priest. It was while studying at Glasgow University and becoming involved in the life of the chaplaincy that Fr Campbell discerned the call to priesthood. He was encouraged and supported throughout by Fr Keenan. In a letter to clergy announcing these appointments, Handing on the Word of God DURING Mass on the Second Sunday of Lent, Joseph O’Donnell was instituted as a lector as part of his formation towards ministry as a deacon. The short rite was carried out by Archbishop Philip Tartaglia as he presided at the Mass in St Jude and St John Ogilvie’s, Barlanark. Presenting Mr O’Donnell with the Bible, the Archbishop instructed him to proclaim the Scripture in church and hand on its teachings in parish catechesis. Although a parishioner of St Mungo’s, Townhead, Mr O’Donnell has linked up with Fr Allan Cameron in Barlanark as part of his formation. Archbishop Tartaglia stated: “I am only too aware that the priests across the Archdiocese are stretched to cover all our parish communities. “Evangelisation and vocations are two aspects of the strategy we need to bring to bear on our situation in order to lessen the pressure on our presbyterate and to give the clergy an even chance of doing an effective job.” He also indicated that a further review of communities and parishes across the archdiocese will be undertaken. That was the upbeat, heartfelt message that Archbishop Philip Tartaglia delivered at the end of the Rite of Election in St Andrew’s Cathedral. He had just witnessed 85 people – women and men of different ages and life experiences – express their desire to be baptised and become members of the Catholic Church. “I always think that if anyone is sceptical about God’s activity in the word, they should look at you and be sure that God really works in the SIGN OF THE CROSS: The first profession of faith Candidates seeking full communion with their sponsors lives of people, however mysteriously and discreetly,” the Archbishop pointed out. “Even today, which is not reckoned to be an age of faith, God calls people to friendship with him in his holy Church.” As happens in the Church across the world, during the unique and emotive liturgy of the First Sunday of Lent catechumens signed their names in the book of the elect. At the same liturgy, adults who have already been baptised and who seek full communion in the Church made a public declaration of their desire and were assured of the Church’s support in prayer and affection. “You are choosing Christ and his Church, and this fills us with joy and with hope,” Archbishop Tartaglia assured. “But the deeper truth is that God is choosing you to be in his Son Jesus Christ and in his Church through faith and through the sacraments of Baptism and Confirmation, and through the Most Holy Eucharist, which you will receive for the first time at the Easter Vigil. “This is the awesome mystery into which you are about to step, and it fills us with a sense of praise and thanksgiving.” Acknowledging the uniqueness of each person’s story, the Archbishop reflected that God’s presence and action was present in them all. “Some, perhaps the majority, will have come to this day through the influence of your marriage and family,” he said. “Others may have come to this day through the influence of a friend. Some may be able to point to a particular experience or event which has turned you to God and pointed you in the direction of the Catholic Church. “What is true of all of you is that, through God’s grace, working in you and around you, you have felt drawn to Christ and to his sacraments and to his Church.” Tartaglia thanked the families, sponsors, catechists and priests who have supported the candidates and elect as they have deepened their understanding of Catholic faith and life. And he promised the continued prayers of the whole Church during the final weeks of preparation for the sacraments. “You may have to cope with fears, doubts and anxieties that may try to dissuade you from your resolve,” he advised. “So we want to say to you: Be strong with the grace of Christ during these days. Pray and reflect. Hope with all your heart. Speaking at one of the nine Station Masses which he celebrating in the deaneries of the Archdiocese, the Archbishop said the sacrament should be approached “with confidence in the Lord’s loving purpose”. He added: “This is an important message for us especially during Lent, the Church’s penitential season. “We must first of all have a sorrowful and contrite heart for the sins we have committed. Secondly, as far as is humanly possible, we need to make a full confession of our sins, especially of serious sins. “And we need to have a firm purpose of amendment, a true intention to make up for the wrong we have done.” Archbishop Tartaglia stressed that Jesus invites everyone to sincerity, authenticity and humility. He added: “These virtues go a long way in today’s world, especially with young people, and their absence is quickly noted and is damaging for the Church.”
