Fiji
An island paradise
ˇ
A stunning archipelago of some 320 islands and 500 islets, Fiji is an inspirational destination of
sun-drenched beaches, beautiful coral reefs and warm, inviting waters. For unadulterated relaxation,
chill out on the pristine white sand beaches, treat yourself in a day spa or idly browse the shops. If
action and adventure is more your thing, trek, dive, kayak, surf or explore – and be assured that the
whole holiday experience comes hand-in-hand with one of the warmest welcomes, and laid-back
lifestyles, of the South Seas.
As accommodating as it is visually spectacular, Fiji is ideally suited to families, couples, backpackers and
honeymooners alike. There’s a plethora of activities both in the water and on the land, accommodation to
suit all budgets and some of the widest smiles in the Pacific.
It is also a country of great cultural diversity and ancient traditions. Society draws its culture from a
unique blend of Melanesian and Polynesian tradition as well as the influences of European and Indian
settlement, dating back to the early 19th century. Traditional customs have been steadfastly maintained
and integrated not only into village life, but also in business and political circles, and Fiji hosts a wide
variety of cultural events and festivals throughout the year where song and dance play a prominent role.
No matter when you visit, make sure you catch a performance of meke, an indigenous dance narrative
widely performed across the country.
Fijian cuisine is a delicious mix of influences, with Indian, Chinese and European dishes reinterpreted
with a distinct South Pacific flavour. Most of the resorts have their own restaurants, or head into the
towns and villages to sample traditional fare.
The Islands
“sunshine, warmth and
Claiming to be the ‘real Fiji’, the outlying island groups of the Mamanuca and Yasawa are naturally
beautiful both on land and in their surrounding waters. Perfect for island hopping, the Mamanucas lie
just off the coast of Viti Levu and boast the finest weather in Fiji, with year-round sunshine and warm,
gentle breezes. Known for fabulous coral reefs which make excellent dive or snorkel sites, many of the
islands also offer world-class surf breaks and endless water sports including jet skiing, kayaking and
game fishing. The crystal-clear waters lap the endless stretches of sandy beach and the interior boasts
volcanic landscapes and rolling hills.
Further north, the Yasawas are a chain of ancient islands, famed for their tranquil blue lagoons and
imposing volcanic backdrops – perfect destinations if you really want to get away from it all. The most
striking of the islands in the southern group are Kuata, Wayasewa and Waya. Nature sanctuaries afford
opportunities to spot the elusive crested iguanas, and the volcanic mountain peaks provide fabulous
walking and hiking trails.
Fiji is a fantastic place to island hop, with a huge variety of breathtaking options, each complete with
their own distinct character. If you want to get a little more off the beaten track, explore the remote,
rugged and colourful islands of the Lau Group, or the peaceful and historic islands of Ovalau and
