Moffatt, Ryan Noth ’03, Tom Raczka ’00, and Marielle Zagone It started with a light, consistent mist as golfers prepared for the 23 rd Annual Marian Catholic Endowment Golf Classic on August 13, 2012 at Flossmoor Country Club and Idlewild Country Club. As the day progressed, the rain followed. The mild to moderate rainfall covered the golf courses while 165 golfers, unaffected by conditions, played their rounds. Whether to support Marian Catholic High School’s Endowment Classic Scholarship Fund or to enjoy the day with good friends and colleagues, the classic was a tremendous success. The 2012 EGC raised $109,000, exceeding the $100,000 goal. First-year manager of the popular event, Patricia Trebe, commended the Advancement Office leadership and the team effort along with the golf committee of 24 members, co-chaired by Greg Underwood, Flossmoor, IL and Mark Peifer ’81, Munster, IN. Established in 1989, the Marian Catholic Golf Classic has focused on building a future of scholarships through endowment. “The balance in the Endowment Golf Classic account grows stronger every year,” said Sister Judine Hilbing, O.P., President of Marian Catholic. “The scholarships we award are funded by the market return on investments, so all the proceeds from this event strengthen the principal investment of the endowment.” Mike Kennedy ’80, who participates annually with a fivesome that’s composed of elementary to high school classmates and friends, said, “I was blessed with a Marian Catholic education by my parents and I have both a duty and a desire to share that same blessing with others. The Endowment Classic is a good way to give back and to have a great time doing it.” At the start of play, golfer guests were welcomed and thanked by current EGC Scholars, William Perkins, a junior, and Hannah Schmitz, a senior. Each shared with the golfers and sponsors their personal reflection on the scholarship program, promising “not to let them down” as they pursue academic studies along with band and lacrosse, respectively, helping them to become Scholars with a Soul in the Marian tradition. For 35 students this past school year, the Endowment Golf Classic was more than just a golf outing. For them, it meant the advantage of a Marian Catholic High School education through the Endowment Classic Scholarship Fund. The fund has grown to become the largest scholarship within the Marian Catholic institutional endowment portfolio, posting more than $2.3 million, awarding $80,000 in scholarships this past year to students of solid academic promise, demonstrating financial need. This funding achievement is only possible because of the loyal support from our MCHS community and stewardship of the Dominican Sisters and the Board of Directors. 6
The Marian Catholic Endowment Golf Classic 2013 The Marian Catholic Endowment Golf Classic Committee is proud to announce the 2013 golf outing will be held at Olympia Fields Country Club on Monday, September 16 th “Hosting the Marian Catholic Endowment Golf Classic at the famed Olympia Fields Country Club has always been a goal of the EGC Committee and we are pleased to offer this opportunity to our golfer guests next year while keeping the same rate as years past,” said Greg Underwood, co-chair of the event. The event will be played on both of Olympia Fields’ two famed courses, the North Course and the South Course. “The event is guaranteed to be a great experience for every golfer who enjoys a world class Chicago south suburban course, golfing where Tiger Woods and Bobby Jones have played, meeting new life-long friends, and winning great prizes while donating to college preparatory high school education,” said EGC committee member and Marian Catholic parent Paul Jenkins. “The Endowment Golf Classic features playing your own ball, just like Tiger or Bobby, while offering outstanding prizes, and the absolute best valued auction right at the course.” Registration Cost The event cost at Olympia Fields is an exceptional value at $295 per golfer, the same rate as past years, and will include 18-holes of championship golf on the course of choice, along with lunch, course refreshments, dinner, open bar, and golfer participation gifts. “The Endowment Golf Classic is a wonderful opportunity to share ideas and open new doors for opportunities for both friendship and for growing your business,” said Michael Olszak, MCHS Board of Director and Endowment Golf Classic Committee member. “It also is a unique occasion to spend some time with community leaders from the surrounding area. There is tremendous value in the event in that one makes new contacts and new friends along with a shared responsibility supporting our community and school.” Young Alums Special Offer As a result of generous offers from two committee members who want to be sure the outing stays affordable for our young alumni, they will gift the cost difference for the first 30 Young Alums who reserve at the special rate of $195 to alumni 10 years out of Marian Catholic (2003-2013). “This is a terrific chance to play a premier course that many of us would not have access to and could not afford at a private course of this caliber at this price,” said Christopher Lilek ’04, EGC Committee Member. In 2011, Olympia Fields hosted the 63 rd United States Girls’ Junior Championship and in 2015, the tradition will continue with the playing of the 115 th United States Amateur Championship, after which Olympia Fields will join only eight other American clubs - including Winged Foot, Oakland Hills, and Cherry Hills - that have hosted the United States Open Championship (1928, 2003), the United States Senior Open Championship (1997), the PGA Championship (1925, 1961), and the United States Amateur Championship (2015). Registration Information A terrific turnout is expected and golfer guests are welcome and encouraged to make early reservations. Reservations will be taken on a first come, first served basis. A space will only be reserved once registration is paid. Invitations will be mailed in June, however, registrations can be placed in advance by contacting Patricia Trebe, Annual Programs Manager.
