much of this “perceived open space” does not have permanent or,
in many cases, any legal protection from development.
underestimates how much land has been truly conserved
provides a false sense of security to those who value open space
often based on a poor assumption of what lands really are protected
left unprotected, it is only a matter of time before this land
succumbs to economic pressures to be developed to more
intensive residential, commercial or other uses
