Grasses like bamboo are the world’s
most renewable source of building
material, growing 13 cm per day.
Bamboo is harvested at 4-5 years of age
and because it is a grass, it grows again
immediately. Trees take minimum seven
years to harvest time, and never grow
again. ZERI scientists adapted a
Japanese method of preserving bamboo
with its own chemicals over two floors.
Simón Vélez developed new building
techniques to create both, the ZERI
pavilion and affordable homes. A 500
m 2 plot of bamboo yields the necessary
amount for one house each year.
