The project started <strong>in</strong> 2005 by Shelli<strong>to</strong> and four students <strong>in</strong> his Geographic<br />

Information Systems class. Shelli<strong>to</strong> and his students began <strong>to</strong> digitize <strong>campus</strong> build<strong>in</strong>gs.<br />

Us<strong>in</strong>g a laser range f<strong>in</strong>der, students measured the heights of build<strong>in</strong>gs. They<br />

developed a model of the <strong>to</strong>pography of <strong>campus</strong>, allow<strong>in</strong>g the build<strong>in</strong>gs <strong>to</strong> be positioned<br />

on the terra<strong>in</strong>. And they <strong>to</strong>ok thousands of pho<strong>to</strong>s of build<strong>in</strong>gs <strong>to</strong> assist <strong>in</strong><br />

mak<strong>in</strong>g the models as true <strong>to</strong> life as possible, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g the rows of bleacher seats at<br />

Stambaugh Stadium, the <strong>in</strong>tricate lattice on Jones Hall and the brick design <strong>in</strong> various<br />

build<strong>in</strong>gs.<br />

It <strong>to</strong>ok on average 30 <strong>to</strong> 40 hours <strong>to</strong> develop models for each of the build<strong>in</strong>gs,<br />

Shelli<strong>to</strong> said.<br />

The completed site <strong>in</strong>cludes an <strong>in</strong>teractive map of each build<strong>in</strong>g on <strong>campus</strong> and<br />

a second map that allows users <strong>to</strong> view models of various sections of <strong>campus</strong>. Each<br />

map can also be viewed through Google Earth, allow<strong>in</strong>g the user <strong>to</strong> zoom from<br />

Earth orbit down <strong>to</strong> the location of each build<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

The <strong>new</strong> 3-D <strong>campus</strong> map shows Jones Hall at Wick and L<strong>in</strong>coln avenues.<br />

Simon, an African pengu<strong>in</strong> from the National<br />

Stambaugh Stadium as <strong>YSU</strong> Pengu<strong>in</strong> quarterback<br />

Tom Zetts looks on. Simon visited the stadium over<br />

the summer and also at homecom<strong>in</strong>g on Oct. 20<br />

as part of the university’s Centennial Celebration.<br />

Although native <strong>to</strong> Africa, Simon was born at the<br />

Maryland Zoo <strong>in</strong> Baltimore. Word is that Simon and<br />
