filter. A quantifier like two sailors denotes <strong>the</strong> family <strong>of</strong> sets which intersect with <strong>the</strong> set <strong>of</strong><br />

sailors c<strong>on</strong>taining at least two sailors, but <strong>the</strong>re is no n<strong>on</strong>-empty set B which would be <strong>the</strong><br />

subset <strong>of</strong> all such sets in every model. But exactly this situati<strong>on</strong> is true for a quantifier like<br />

every sailor: <strong>the</strong>re is a set B (<strong>the</strong> set <strong>of</strong> sailors) which is a subset <strong>of</strong> all sets in <strong>the</strong> family <strong>of</strong> sets<br />

denoted by <strong>the</strong> quantifier. This is why <strong>the</strong> <strong>principal</strong> filter hypo<strong>the</strong>sis cannot help us in<br />

explaining <strong>the</strong> semantic c<strong>on</strong>diti<strong>on</strong>s behind <strong>clitic</strong> <strong>doubling</strong> in Albanian: weak quantifiers in<br />

Albanian can be <strong>clitic</strong> doubled even though weak quantifiers can never generate <strong>principal</strong><br />

filters.<br />

C<strong>on</strong>cluding this secti<strong>on</strong>, since weak quantifiers (which can never denote <strong>principal</strong> filters)<br />

can be <strong>clitic</strong> doubled in Albanian (as witnessed by our example (4)), an approach al<strong>on</strong>g <strong>the</strong><br />

lines <strong>of</strong> Gutiérrez-Rexach 1999 is untenable.<br />

2.3. Fur<strong>the</strong>r specificati<strong>on</strong>s: determiner subtypes, <strong>clitic</strong> <strong>doubling</strong>, and informati<strong>on</strong><br />

structure<br />

In §2.1 we saw that both str<strong>on</strong>g and weak quantifiers may be <strong>clitic</strong> doubled in Albanian.<br />

The data in (10) through (12), however, fur<strong>the</strong>r complicate <strong>the</strong> picture; while n<strong>on</strong>e <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

quantifiers in (10) through (12) are <strong>principal</strong> filters, some allow <strong>clitic</strong> <strong>doubling</strong> and some do<br />

not. <str<strong>on</strong>g>More</str<strong>on</strong>g> specifically, while weak m<strong>on</strong>ot<strong>on</strong>e increasing quantifiers may be <strong>clitic</strong> doubled, as<br />

shown in (10), weak m<strong>on</strong>ot<strong>on</strong>e decreasing quantifiers and n<strong>on</strong>-m<strong>on</strong>ot<strong>on</strong>e quantifiers cannot be<br />

<strong>clitic</strong> doubled, as illustrated in (11) and (12) respectively.<br />
