Chair’s welcome Dear Colleague It is my pleasure to invite you to attend a satellite symposium titled ‘The dark side of the brain: exploring negative symptoms and new therapeutic prospects for patients with schizophrenia’, on the occasion of the 25th <strong>ECNP</strong> Congress, with educational financial support provided by <strong>Roche</strong>. Negative symptoms are a relatively overlooked aspect of the phenomenology of schizophrenia. During the satellite symposium we will review developments in our understanding of the nature and occurrence of negative symptoms across the course of illness, as well as evidence of the important relationships between negative symptoms and patient functioning, and the consequent impact of negative symptoms on physicians, families and health and social care systems. There will also be an opportunity to hear about the latest thinking with regard to the neurobiology of negative symptoms, and how this may be leading to new therapeutic approaches. I will be joined by a distinguished faculty of scientists and clinicians, who will share with you their expert insights and opinions, and my job will be to ensure a lively exchange of ideas. We hope that we will be able to shed some light on this intriguing area and that you will leave with a better appreciation of the latest developments in clinical research. Please join us in Vienna on the 14th of October. We look forward to your participation and questions, in what promises to be a most instructive and enjoyable meeting.
