Joshua McAdams
East Timor Immersion Experience
On 25 June Joshua traveled with students
from Jesuit and Ignatian schools in
Melbourne, Drysdale, Sydney and Hervey
Bay to East Timor. The purpose of the trip
was to immerse in the culture of East Timor
and be educated in the living conditions
that exist just 45 minutes from Australia.
East Timor’s unemployment rate is at 20% with 42% of its
population living in poverty. In the Second World War it was
occupied by Japan and in 1975 was invaded by Indonesia.
Indonesian occupation ended in 1999 leaving 70% percent
of buildings burnt to rubble and over 100,000 people killed.
Joshua traveled to mountain top villages where amongst
tin shacks would be a magnificent church. People would
walk hours to worship there 2 or 3 times a week. He
discovered the most bewildering thing about East Timor is
the happiness of the people, not one person was without a
smile on their face, even though 15 years ago it was not safe
to visit a neighbor.
