Invitation
Marseille and the MuCEM
Marseille is the oldest city in France. Its urban architecture and population reflect its
2600 years-long story. This rich heritage is a durable link for present and future generations
with the multiple aspects and adventures of the « Phocaean City ». As a welcoming
harbour city for immigrants, Marseille has gained a strong identity and a unique melting
pot culture. Today, the second largest city in France and Mediterranean metropolis, has
been designated « European capital city of culture ». All the 2013 year long outstanding
cultural events will be held, workshops, exhibitions, performances and festivals.
For the occasion Marseille has renewed its urban figure and shoreline with iconic architectural
achievements attesting of an undamaged creative power. The Museum of European
and Mediterranean Civilizations (MUCEM), opening in 2013, complementing the
Musée du Quai Branly and the National Museum of the History of Immigration, creates
an intellectual heritage and a national centre devoted to world’s cultures.
It also constitutes an outstanding realization due to the systematic structural and decorative
use of UHPFRC. After the roofing of Millau Viaduct toll gate, the villa Navarra or the
Angels footbridge, it is a decisive step in the technical and aesthetic use of these materials
in the French Provence and over.
We look forward to welcoming you in Marseille and letting you discover this unique and
bold architectural achievement, precisely during the technical exchange opportunity of
UHPFRC symposium on UHPFRC potential for building.
