REGIONAL UPDATE: SOUTHWEST TRAINING CONTINUES TO GROW KIRBY BRUCHHAUS, SW DIRECTOR OF EDUCATION & TRAINING The semester at the Southwest Training Center is off to a great start with over 350 students enrolled in afternoon and evening classes. New students in the millwright and pipefitting programs are showing great interest in the crafts, which is great since these are two crafts that will need new skilled craft people to fill the existing positions that are going to be vacated by the baby boomers soon to be retiring from the industry. We still have tremendous interest in our welding and electrical classes. For the last two semesters we have had to split the Electrical 100 class, so that our students can do bookwork and have time to participate in hands on classes. The welding classes are filled and have a large waiting list of people wanting to get into the course. This is encouraging; we have a large number of high school students who attend along with students that have completed one course and coming back to be multi-crafted in their fields and make more money. We encourage all of our members to get involved in our training center and invite our industrial vendors and contractors to attend our steering meeting on the second Tuesday of every month. We also invite our contractors and owner personnel to get involved with our Training teams efforts on the second Thursday of every month. These meeting are very important and I hope that everyone would get involved with the efforts that we are trying to accomplish to train and certify craft people to work in our local facilities. These teams play a vital role in the ABC Training center. We need our members input to help make our training center successful. We just had Florence Tate who is our ABC consultant on accreditation come and give an update on the progress and direction we are taking on our journey for getting Nationally Accredited. The process is advancing and hopefully we can complete the process and become accredited by the end of the year. We just finished taking part in the Career Day Education Fair the Lake Charles Civic Center. The fair was for 8 th grade students from Calcasieu, Cameron, Jeff Davis, Allen, and Beauregard Parishes. There were about 3500 Students that participated. There were 43 different career paths that were shown and demonstrated to help enlighten our youth to the different jobs that may be available for careers. Mr. Bob Smith from La. Pigment and Mr. Jim Szydlo both representing SLCUC played a big part in the last two years organizing this adventure for our youth that will be the craft people of tomorrow. 14 Merit Shop Message | March 2012
LCEF UPDATE: LCEF RELEASES GRANT APPLICATION ASHLEY BRYANT, LCEF The Louisiana Construction Education Foundation is excited to announce that we are ready to give back to communities across Louisiana. Now that we have received our first round of support from local business and industry leaders, it is time to take the next step in fulfilling our mission by donating funds to construction training. The following strategies reflect our mission statement as well as guide the criteria for our program support: To identify and develop new funding sources for construction education programs in Louisiana. To increase the number and quality of construction education programs in Louisiana. To support Louisiana’s construction workforce through partnerships with public and private training and safety providers across the state. To determine and efficiently address present and future workforce needs of Louisiana’s construction and industrial maintenance industry. To develop a stronger workforce for Louisiana by expanding quality educational and training opportunities to individuals seeking a rewarding career in construction. The LCEF looks forward to supporting programs that provide Nation Center for Construction Education and Research (NCCER) certified education. This may include high schools, technical colleges or other training and education providers. We receive applications on a rolling, monthly basis.
