Health Taking aim at youths ’s programmes arm youths with the right spirit to become leaders and ambassadors among their peers Malaysia as an emerging developing nation is experiencing rapid growth and with that comes some social problems and issues which have to be addressed. One of these is that of youths, especially those between 13-25 years old, who may be disoriented by the change in environment from small kampung to big cities, rural schools to urban ones and lack of friends in work environments. In taking note of this issue, the Ministry of Health has been introducing programmes to guide youths and others on overcoming these social ills and giving them avenues to seek help and not be drawn into the world of depression, drugs and other vices. Prostar is a Youth Health Programme which basically is ‘from youth, through youth and for youth’ which aims to bring awareness of healthy lifestyles, practices, attitudes, spirit of volunteerism and support for fellow troubled youths. In practice, the initial groups are given extensive information on healthy lifestyles and communication skills with knowledge to plan programmes to become effective ambassadors for a brighter future among youths who have stumbled along the way. By working as individuals and groups, their efforts will have that multiplier effect which can reach out further and affect more respondents through economic activities, training, arts and culture, recreational, communications and social work. Jobs and expectations that come with them can make youths feel responsible and change their way of thinking as well as providing them with a steady income for a brighter future. As training is provided to unskilled youths, they have the opportunity to become skilled labour or even self employed like artists, business entrepreneurs or trainers eventually; all the activities and programmes of Prostar are in collaboration with existing relevant agencies and non-governmental organisations which provide a wide network of opportunities for youths to excel in various fields and to lead a healthy lifestyle. The most common habits of wayward youths are smoking, drugs and drinking which can be overcome with the right counseling, motivation and change of lifestyle. Other serious problems include prostitution and anti social behaviours, which include diseases like Aids and other transmittable ones as well as unwanted pregnancies and abandoned babies not to mention criminal activities too. Prostar is the programme that will transform youths into mature, responsible and knowledgeable citizens who will contribute to the growth of the nation and inculcate healthy lifestyle among the masses. For complete body bliss, Surainee recommended the invigorating Javanese full body massage to stimulate blood circulation and improve energy flow, and body lulur, one of the signature treatments available here. “The body lulur is a whole body exfoliation treatment where lulur paste is applied to exfoliate the skin and slough away dead skin cells,” said Surainee. “After the body has been exfoliated, home-made yoghurt is applied to the body to maintain the pH balance of the skin. As a result, one’s skin will definitely feel smooth and soft after the treatment.” According to Surainee, the lulur are made fresh using only natural ingredients and clients will be able to select from eight types such as Bali coffee, lavender and vanilla, floral sea salt, cocoa butter, mangir herbal, mocha spice, coconut honey and orange coconut, each of which are highly beneficial in their own way. Other treatments available include the aromatherapy Javanese back facial, the first of its kind at the spa that comprises of a back wash, back scrub, full masking and a soothing back massage as well as Javanese totok facial, a full facial massage that concentrates on the acupressure point of the face and is well-known to improve blood circulation and promote healthy facial glow. At Tjantek Spa, freshly brewed jamu are also available where in Indonesia, the concoction herbal drink is known for its health attributes. “Usually taken by women, we have six types of jamu such as jamu sehat wanita, tolak angin, awet ayu, kuku bima, empot2, and rapet, each of which promotes attributes such as improving blood circulation, skin complexion and so on,” explained Surainee.
