2 International Student Program The Louis Riel School Division has welcomed International Students to their community for many years. This year LRSD has hosted students from China, Brazil, Sri Lanka, Mexico, Senegal, Nigeria, Thailand, Taiwan, Germany, Russia, Vietnam, Ukraine, South Korea, Hong Kong, Japan, Egypt, Syria, Honduras, Mexico and Singapore! As the International Student Program continues to grow, so does our need for homestay families. A homestay family is a family who are Canadian citizens or Permanent Residents. The province of Manitoba’s International Education Department defines a homestay family as “A family unit, of at least one person, providing accommodation and sharing its home, hospitality and culture with an international student, usually for a fee”. We embrace the diversity of homestay families as each family unit may differ from one another in regards to nationality, number of adults, children, pets, etc. The commonality between families is their desire to open their homes to students from another part of the world. Our hope is the students will learn about Canadian culture and in return the homestay families will learn about the student’s culture. We hope homestay families will embrace the students as “family” who are living far away from their biological ones. International students may study in LRSD for various lengths of time. Some students are study for as little as 3 weeks (Summer Program), some come for one semester, and some come for a whole school year and then return to complete their high school studies in our Manitoban and Canadian universities. You can view full program information at http://isp.lrsd.net where applications are available. Thank you Field Day by Kai For the field day, the grade’s 5/6’s this year went to H.S. Paul School. There we did some track like Javelin, 800 meter, hurdles, and shot put. Those were some of the events. It was really fun, my favorite event was Javelin. For the two years I went they were really fun. It was a good experience for me when I go into grade 7.
Grades 3, 5 and 6 Visit to Farm Food Discovery Centre Hello Dr. Penner people! The grades 3’s and 5/6’s went on a pretty awesome field trip. It was The Farm Food Discovery Centre. We went on Friday, June the 7 th 2013. We went to learn about plants and animals, in other words, science. We made bread. We made Bannock and White bread. Later in the day we ate the bread we made. How we made the bread: We made yeast, We added sugar and flour and kneaded it. Then we put it in the oven. Later we learned all about wheat. We learned how wheat is made into food. There was yucky wheat. It even had a screw inside the wheat. The farmer had to clean the wheat. There was a potato chip v.s carrot exercise bike. There was a breeding place for the boar pigs and a place for the sows (pregnant pigs.) There was a place for feeding baby pigs and a place for baby pigs. The shopping was a place where you would scan the food and it would give you fun facts about the food and how much you should have every day. There was a display of good and bad microbes and there was even a little air shower. There was a drawer full of cooking spices and so you had to smell them and guess their names. There was a little (ok not that little) game that help you go poo. You’d pick an avatar and choose a food you’d pick the fiber and small poo means good, medium means great, and big means AWESOME!!! Alfalfa roots can grow up to 3.5 meters! Photosynthesis is a process that the sun makes food for the plant. There was also a photosynthesis game. There was a little place where soybeans, wheat and other seeds could be touched. There was a tractor simulator where there was a toy tractor and a video of a tractor moving in the field. There was a hand-moving grinder which would make flour. There was a system where you would vote what you would only want to eat. Caramel won! Pigs are used to make products like gummy bears, crayons and other stuff. Bacon was also there!!! There was a diagram of where different cuts of meat would come from. There was a display of where Canadian farm food would be exported. Asia and Mexico were the greatest consumers. We learned farm machinery is very expensive. It showed the process of Wheat seeds to food. This is the end of our article. By Madison Mosher and Muhammad Abdullah 3 Patrol Goldeyes Game – June 12 th The Patrols had an excellent day to watch the Winnipeg Goldeyes and the Wichita Wingnuts play baseball. The weather was warm with some clouds to give relief from the sun. The Goldeyes won the game in the bottom of the ninth for a 4-3 victory. The students loved the food and getting autographs at the end of the game. Thank you to the PAC for helping in the purchasing of these tickets. A big thank you to our Patrols for their work this school year!
