Introduction of Xi'an
Xi'an, once called Chang'an, is a historical city in China.
It served as the ancient capital from 1100 B.C. for twelve
dynasties spanning over 1120 years. It was the oriental
cultural centre of the Silk Road. Xi'an is famed all over
the world for its glorious history. Specialists and scholars
regard it as an inexhaustible treasure-house of literature
while heads of state from many countries and people
from all walks of life turn their eyes to this tourist attraction,
trying to broaden their knowledge of Chinese civilization.
The cultural relics and historical sites preserved in Xi'an
are rich and numerous. They reflect from different angles
the features of the ancient Chinese society: the Terra-cotta
Army, pottery warriors and horses (200 B.C.), is located
about 10 km east of the city, near the Mausoleum of the
First Emperor of Qin Dynasty; the Bell Tower and Drum
Tower in the central city date back to the Ming dynasty
(1368-1644 A.D.); the Xi'an city wall, 11.9 Kilometres in
circumference, was the only completely preserved city
wall of ancient China which was previously built of
rammed earth and surfaced with grey bricks in 1568 A.D.
There are numerous ancient temples, pagodas, ruins and
remains all over the city and its suburbs.
