Naiomi Medrano, a fellow fifth grader and also my best friend! She has been here at Iliahi for 7 years! She started off here in the Ka Nani O Keiki Pre-school Program, which was taught by former teacher, Mrs. Grace Efurd. Throughout the years at this school she learn the importance of long-life friendships. Her favorite subject is art because she is really good at it, and it brings out who she really is as a person. What she likes most about art is her drawing skills. She even won the Lions Club sponsored “Sight is Beautiful” poster contest! Her favorite teacher is Mrs. Felix because she makes her laugh and is a fantastic teacher. Her favorite book is Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. She likes it because of the character, Dolores Umbridge, or the “Pink Lady”. During her spare time, she likes talking to and texting her best friends. She goes to them for advice, or just when she needs someone to talk to. Also during her spare time, she likes playing her favorite sport, volleyball. She likes volleyball because her friends got into it, and they were telling her to join, so she did. Earlier in the story, I mentioned Naiomi won first place for the “Sight is Beautiful” poster contest. She drew the Earth with people from different cultures around it. What inspired her to draw that? It was beautiful to her so she thought it would be beautiful to others, too. Well, now you know a little about my friend, Naiomi! PAGE 4

NATIONAL YOYO DAY by: Dylan Santos April 30 th is National Yo-yo Day, which is also the birthday of Duncan Yoyo’s inventor, Donald Duncan. Yo-yos are believed to be the world’s oldest toys. In fact, it was discovered that ivory yo-yos were made in China about 1000 B.C. In 1928, a man by the name of Pedro Flores built his first yo-yo factory. He started to hold yoyo competitions. Around this time, Donald F. Duncan saw his first yoyo, and the rest is history. In 1968, a company named Flambeau, purchased the Duncan name and continued to produce plastic yo-yo’s. In 1992, a yo-yo went into outer space with an astronaut named Jeffry Hoffman on the Space Shuttle Atlantis. Yo-yos have been popular toys for over 2000 years, so I think that they will remain a popular toy for kids all over the world for many years! HUMOROUS DAY by: Samuel Johansson Did you know that April is National Humor Month? National Humorous Day is on April 19. It is just one of the holidays in April. It was created in 1976 by Larry Wilde. He said that since taxes are due on the fifteenth, it can be one of the most stressful months of the year. It’s also the only month that begins with April Fool’s Day. April Fool’s Day has been around since the 1500s. It is on April 1 that Larry Wilde also said that it is important to laugh and get out all of the big laughs that you can. STRESS AWARENESS MONTH by: Brandi Leong Did you know that April is officially Stress Awareness Month? For the whole month doctors and health experts increasing public awareness about the topic “Stress”. This year, 2010, will be the 18 th year that we recognize Stress Awareness Month. The doctors and health experts will tell you step-by-step ways to handle stress so it will be simpler for you to do on your own. Most people want to get rid of stress so they can relax. That is what they are trying to do. One way you can get rid of stress is by relaxing. You can relax by counting down from ten and to take deep breaths. I hope some of these facts can help you relax.
