Women In Search of Health
Since the discovery of the breast and
ovarian cancer susceptibility genes, BRCA1
and BRCA2, our understanding of cancer
predisposition has grown significantly.
Women with a family history of breast or
ovarian cancer can now make better decisions
about cancer screening and prevention by
gaining knowledge of their genetic status.
The WISH program is a monthly education
and support group for women who have
learned through genetic testing that they carry
a BRCA mutation. Participation helps women
develop an informed and personal response to
the difficult decisions that they may face.
The WISH program is a collaborative effort
of the Mount Sinai Breast Health Resource
Program and the Cancer Genetic Counseling
Program in the Department of Human
Each WISH meeting is led by clinical social
workers and a cancer genetic counselor.
Healthcare professionals and other guest
speakers are invited to offer their expertise on
topics of interest to group members.
Participants will explore and share experiences
about the following issues:
• high risk surveillance strategies
• risk-reducing surgery
• chemoprevention
• anxiety and stress management
• sexuality and reproduction
• family and relationship implications
• living with uncertainty
All discussions and personal information will
be kept confidential.
WISH is offered at no cost to participants.
