Bellarmine University is an independent, liberal arts, Catholic university,
founded in 1950 by the Archdiocese of Louisville. In 1968, Bellarmine
merged with Ursuline College and became an independent university
governed by a self-perpetuating Board of Trustees. Bellarmine continues
in the Catholic tradition, the oldest continuing tradition of higher
education in the history of the world. The university is named for Robert
Bellarmine, Jesuit, Cardinal and Saint. Our spiritual and ethical
role model is Trappist Monk and author Thomas Merton, champion of
social justice, peace, ecumenism, ecology, and contemplative practice.
Merton’s works are collected at the world-renowned Merton Center on
Bellarmine’s campus.
The heart and soul of Bellarmine is our talented and caring faculty.
Louisville—A Sports Lover’s Town
Although Louisville ranks as the 16th largest city in America, it is able
to maintain its small town charm and feel while offering all the big city
amenities: an award-winning arts scene with top level theater, music and
visual arts; a parks system designed by Frederick Law Olmsted that is the
envy of cities nationwide; a vibrant downtown life, recently invigorated
with the addition of 4th Street Live, Waterfront Park, Louisville Slugger
Field, Extreme Park, the state-of-the-art Ali Museum honoring the
“greatest,” and the e-Main USA Technology corridor; and a zoo that offers
world-class exhibits such as the Gorilla Forest, which recently earned
special recognition from the American Zoological Association.
Louisville is a sports lovers’ city. Home to the world-famous Kentucky
Derby, Louisville each year welcomes hundreds of thousands of race fans to
Churchill Downs to experience the most exciting two minutes in sports.
But Louisville has so many more sporting thrills to offer. The Louisville
Bats, the Triple-A affiliate of the Cincinnati Reds, play ball in downtown
Louisville’s charming Slugger Field. And, of course, Louisville is home to
the famous Louisville Slugger, whose headquarters offer daily bat factory
tours and an interactive museum full of baseball memorabilia. The city
also boasts Freedom Hall, a 19,000-seat arena that has hosted six NCAA
Final Fours, along with countless college and high school games, NBA
exhibition games, minor-league hockey contests, and Arena Football
League games. And the Muhammed Ali Center celebrates the values and
life of The Greatest Of All Time.
Louisville’s golf courses are some of the finest in the Midwest, as
evidenced by the PGA’s selection of Jack Nicklaus-designed Valhalla for
the 1996 and 2000 PGA Championships, the 2004 Senior PGA Championship,
and the 2008 Ryder Cup.
With its renowned Olmstead Parks System and ambitions new “City of
Parks,” Louisville is also a paradise for amateur sports lovers. The thrilling
Extreme Park offers excitement for skaters, skateboarders, and bikers,
including 40,000 square feet of skating surface and a 24-foot full pipe.
The city’s parks offer everything from hiking to golf to tennis to soccer,
to Frisbee golf. And the beautiful Ohio River is a spectacular playground
for boating, skiing, and fishing.
With all of that going for it, it’s little wonder that Places Rated Almanac
consistently ranks Louisville as one of the best places to live in
America.
