<strong>in</strong>tern<strong>at</strong>ional Master’s proGraM <strong>in</strong><br />

softWare systeMs enG<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>G<br />

the Master’s program <strong>in</strong> software systems eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g is primarily <strong>in</strong>tended<br />

for <strong>in</strong>tern<strong>at</strong>ional students hold<strong>in</strong>g a bachelor’s degree <strong>in</strong> Computer science,<br />

Computer eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g, or a closely rel<strong>at</strong>ed field. the program aims to <strong>at</strong>tract excellent<br />

students from all over the world. Courses are offered entirely <strong>in</strong> english.<br />

to successfully complete the program, students are required to earn 120 eCts<br />

credits, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g 30 credits for the Master’s thesis and 10 credits for German<br />

language classes. German is not an entrance requirement.<br />

build<strong>in</strong>g on the strengths of <strong>rWtH</strong> <strong>in</strong>form<strong>at</strong>ik,<br />

the program focuses on the design and<br />

implement<strong>at</strong>ion of complex software systems,<br />

<strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g their embedd<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> technical and<br />

socio-technical systems.<br />

the degree program is organized very<br />

similar to the Master <strong>in</strong> Computer science, with<br />

one notable difference beyond the language of<br />

teach<strong>in</strong>g: <strong>in</strong>stead of the 18 credit applic<strong>at</strong>ion<br />

m<strong>in</strong>or, students follow a special curriculum of<br />

lectures and a team lab course focus<strong>in</strong>g on the<br />

development str<strong>at</strong>egies projects for large-scale<br />

software-<strong>in</strong>tensive systems and their project<br />

management.<br />

<strong>rWtH</strong> <strong>in</strong>form<strong>at</strong>ik is <strong>in</strong>volved <strong>in</strong> numerous networks with <strong>in</strong>tern<strong>at</strong>ional universities<br />

and cooper<strong>at</strong>es closely with the daad exchange service. W<strong>at</strong>ch out for<br />

scholarships or research assistantships available as f<strong>in</strong>ancial support to our best<br />

Media <strong>in</strong>forM<strong>at</strong>iCs<br />

the bonn-aachen <strong>in</strong>tern<strong>at</strong>ional Center for <strong>in</strong>form<strong>at</strong>ion technology (b-it) is a<br />

jo<strong>in</strong>t <strong>in</strong>stitute of <strong>rWtH</strong> aachen <strong>university</strong> and the <strong>university</strong> of bonn, offer<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>in</strong>terdiscipl<strong>in</strong>ary <strong>in</strong>tern<strong>at</strong>ional Master’s programs <strong>in</strong> Media <strong>in</strong>form<strong>at</strong>ics and life<br />

science <strong>in</strong>form<strong>at</strong>ics s<strong>in</strong>ce 2003. Currently, about 180 Master’s students from<br />

more than 40 countries study <strong>at</strong> b-it; gradu<strong>at</strong>es have an excellent placement<br />

record <strong>in</strong> the software, media, communic<strong>at</strong>ions, and life science <strong>in</strong>dustries as<br />

well as <strong>in</strong> lead<strong>in</strong>g research <strong>in</strong>stitutions worldwide. s<strong>in</strong>ce 2008, the b-it research<br />

school offers the opportunity to cont<strong>in</strong>ue gradu<strong>at</strong>e <strong>studies</strong> beyond the Master’s<br />

towards a doctor<strong>at</strong>e.<br />

the <strong>in</strong>tern<strong>at</strong>ional Master’s program <strong>in</strong> Media <strong>in</strong>form<strong>at</strong>ics will educ<strong>at</strong>e you<br />

to successfully master the novel technical and economic challenges <strong>at</strong> the<br />

crossroads of computer science, software eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g, next-gener<strong>at</strong>ion communic<strong>at</strong>ion<br />

systems, and media. 90 course credits must be obta<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>in</strong> three ma<strong>in</strong><br />

blocks:<br />

• Computer science and m<strong>at</strong>hem<strong>at</strong>ical found<strong>at</strong>ions<br />

• Multimedia technology<br />

• Media science and bus<strong>in</strong>ess aspects.<br />

the program is dist<strong>in</strong>guished by a significant proportion of research lab courses<br />

embedded <strong>in</strong> basic and applied research of the fraunhofer <strong>in</strong>stitutes of applied<br />

<strong>in</strong>form<strong>at</strong>ion technology (fit), and <strong>in</strong>telligent analysis and <strong>in</strong>form<strong>at</strong>ion systems<br />

(iais ), as well as <strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong>dustry. Major topics <strong>in</strong>clude, e.g.: <strong>in</strong>ternet <strong>in</strong>frastructures<br />

and d<strong>at</strong>a Communic<strong>at</strong>ion, digital <strong>in</strong>teractive Media, Management of <strong>in</strong>form<strong>at</strong>ion,<br />

Computer Graphics/anim<strong>at</strong>ion/visualis<strong>at</strong>ion, speech/image/video<br />

process<strong>in</strong>g and technology, security and Cryptography, Cooper<strong>at</strong>ive Work<br />

environments, e-bus<strong>in</strong>ess and knowledge Management, virtual and augmented<br />

reality, and Game design.<br />

the program also <strong>in</strong>cludes methodological aspects of design<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>teractive systems<br />

from the perspectives of software eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g, human-computer <strong>in</strong>teraction<br />

(HCi) and usability, media design, and bus<strong>in</strong>ess requirements. the f<strong>in</strong>al six<br />

months of the program are dedic<strong>at</strong>ed to the 30 credit Master thesis, which can<br />

be completed <strong>in</strong> cooper<strong>at</strong>ion with <strong>in</strong>dustry.<br />
