Department of Oncology in Government Royapettah<br />
Hospital, Chennai will be upgraded as an Institute of<br />
Oncology. A Cancer block with 150 beds will be constructed<br />
at an estimated cost of Rs.17 crores for this purpose. The<br />
Department of Anaesthesia at Madurai Government Rajaji<br />
Hospital, the largest department of Anaesthesia in the<br />
country, will be upgraded as an Institute of Anaesthesia.<br />
51. A provision of Rs.80 crores for maintenance of<br />
government hospitals and another provision of Rs.236 crores for<br />
purchasing medicine have been allocated. Overall, a sum of<br />
Rs.3,889 crores has been allocated for Health and Family<br />
Welfare Department in this Budget.<br />
Electricity<br />
52. After this Government assumed charge, priority has<br />
been accorded to execute power generation projects in public<br />
sector itself through <strong>Tamil</strong> <strong>Nadu</strong> Electricity Board rather than<br />
solely depending on the private sector. Accordingly, works for<br />
1,200 MW capacity in North Chennai thermal power station<br />
expansion project and 600 MW capacity expansion project at<br />
Mettur are under way at a fast pace. First unit of Koodankulam<br />
Atomic Power Plant is expected to be commissioned in the<br />
coming financial year. By way of projects of <strong>Tamil</strong> <strong>Nadu</strong><br />
Electricity Board, Central Public Sector Undertakings and joint<br />
ventures, additional power generation capacity of 1,400 MW will<br />
be installed in the coming financial year.
