Important Contacts Spring 2012 January 20–May 14* Start and end dates vary by semester The Cumberland Arts Academy is a school of fine arts for students of all ages, but focusing on those of school age. It is a branch of the School of Music and Arts of Cumberland University. The Academy offers a variety of private and group instruction classes in music, art and drama. In addition to its educational aims, the Academy also sponsors recitals and concerts, including the Jazz Fest, an annual event that brings over 200 area high school students to perform at the university. The Academy is housed at 311 West Spring Street, across from the June & Bill Heydel Fine Arts Center, and has several studios and group rehearsal rooms specially designed to meet the needs of our curriculum. The faculty members of the Cumberland Arts Academy are highly credentialed in their fields, and several instructors also serve as professors at Cumberland University. Parking: The driveway of the academy is shared by three property-owners. Please enter the driveway slowly as small children are often present. Do not park on the neighbor’s side of the driveway or block the entrance to the driveway that continues onto the property behind us. If the parking lot is full, there are additional parking spaces directly across the street on the university’s campus that are available to students and instructors of the academy. Inclement Weather Closings: The academy rarely closes for inclement weather. If it does close announcements of the closings, or delayed times of opening, will be on the local news s channels 2, 4, and 5. The instructor will contact each student if the lesson is canceled. Important information
PRIVATE LESSON (Tuition: $280 for entire semester) Learning to sing or to play a musical instrument is a highly rewarding pursuit. Our students will receive one 30-minute private lesson per week for 14 weeks. Teachers will contact students after enrollment to answer all questions and to schedule lesson times. Each student is expected to commit to regular practice. Our highly credentialed faculty members are among the best teachers and performers in Middle Tennessee and most teach at Cumberland University. Their affiliations include the Nashville Symphony, the Broadway Series at TPAC, the Sewanee Music Festival, the Tennessee Governor’s School, the Tennessee Mid-State and All-State Band and Chorus, and membership in MTNA, NATS and the National Piano Guild. Piano (age 6 – adult) Ms. Carolyn Blake, Instructor Ms. Teresa Cockburn, Instructor Beginning, intermediate and advanced instruction with theory, technique, and interpretation included. Guitar (age 6 – adult) Mr. William Fitzhugh, Instructor Classical and/or commercial (steel-string) guitar technique and styles (including jazz, rock, blues, country, etc.). Chord shapes, location of notes on neck of guitar, scale/chord theory (especially as related to building chords), and different strum patterns. Voice (age 14 – adult). Ms. Ginger Newman, Instructor Individual singing instruction to develop and enhance the student’s tone production, breathing technique, posture, diction, phrasing, and overall musicality. Varied repertoire per student’s needs. Audition/interview required for new students. Interpretation included. Traditional Violin (age 10 – adult) Mr. David Johnson, Instructor Beginning instruction develops basic playing skills and enhances fine motor skills, includes proper hand positioning, good tone production, bowing rhythm patterns, and rote learning of simple tunes. Gradual introduction to music reading and theory. Intermediate & advanced levels available. (Also appropriate for those particularly interested in Fiddle). Band/Orchestral Instruments (7 th grade – adult) Mr. Glenn Martin, Instructor Mr. Robert Shankle, Instructor Bassoon Flute Clarinet Oboe Saxophone Trombone Trumpet Brass Tuba/Low Carolyn Blake grew up in a small town in South Central Texas surrounded by music. She graduated from the University of North Texas in Denton, TX with a Bachelor of Science in Education Degree (with comprehensive hours in Music). Following graduation, she taught for two years on Long Island, N.Y. She has been involved in teaching piano and piano accompaniment for most of her life. For the past 14 years she has been a staff piano accompanist for Cumberland University and a teacher for the Cumberland Arts Academy since its inception. William “Tiger” Fitzhugh attended Berklee College of Music for 3 years and completed Bachelor and Master Degrees in classical guitar performance at Austin Peay State University. He is the author of the Hal Leonard publication "Classical Guitar for the Steel String Guitarist". A professional musician as well as an educator, he has lived in the Nashville area for over 25 years. He teaches all styles of guitar to all ages of students. Teresa Cockburn graduated from Belmont University in 2006 with a Bachelor of Music emphasis in Music Technology. She currently is an accompanist for many local choirs like the Bert Coble Singers, Blackman High School, Mount Juliet High School, Station Camp High School and Southside Elementary School. She also plays keyboard and background vocals for local artist Frank Light. David Johnson has been a working violinist/fiddler since 1979. His experience includes work with orchestras, chamber music groups and, since 1986, Country singer Randy Travis's touring band. Glenn Martin is active as a composer, arranger, jazz trombonist and clinician throughout the United States and has had compositions or arrangements performed by the United States Marine Band, The Modern Jazz Tuba Project, The Tennessee All Mid-State Jazz Band, The East Tennessee All-State Clinic Jazz Band and by school and college groups across the U.S. He has had pieces published by CPP/Belwin-Warner Brothers, R.B.C. Music, The T.U.B.A. Press and Jazz Anyone Publications. Mr. Martin taught instrumental music at the secondary level for 12 years, directing superior-rated concert, marching and jazz bands. Ginger Newman is an Adjunct Vocal Professor at Cumberland University. For the past five years she has been the Musical Director/Conductor for the University School Middle School and High School productions of their fall musicals at Ingram Hall. She works extensively with TPAC- ED as a Teaching Artist and she was the Education Director of Green Room Projects which worked with at-risk youth creating programs to empower them using the arts. Robert Shankle currently teaches at Trevecca, Lipscomb, Cumberland University and Cumberland Arts Academy. His free-lance woodwind playing includes the Nashville Symphony, the Nashville Jazz Orchestra, Broadway shows, and recording work for Faith Hill, Matchbox 20, and The Temptations to recording in the Christian music field.
